Shining in Our Community
Salinas Fire Department Facility Dogs Assist in LA Fire Effords (And Meet Prince Harry)
Earlier this month, the Los Angeles wildfires were finally contained, but the road to recovery is ongoing. In this challenging time, we want to highlight the incredible support provided by the Salinas Fire Department. Two beloved members of the team, Cruz and Taffy, SFD’s facility dogs, joined their handlers and a dedicated team as they traveled south to assist with the containment efforts.
Cruz and Taffy weren’t just there to help with the technical aspects of firefighting; they also brought much needed emotional support. These two facility dogs offered comfort to firefighters and to the community members affected by the fires. Their calming presence provided moments of peace amid the chaos, offering a reminder that even in the toughest times, compassion can make all the difference.
In an inspiring moment during their journey, Cruz, Taffy, and their handlers had the unique opportunity to meet Prince Harry, who was visiting the area to support disaster relief. Prince Harry took time to learn about the vital role Cruz and Taffy play in supporting first responders, and he praised the Salinas Fire Department for their innovative use of facility dogs in disaster zones.
We’re incredibly proud of the Salinas Fire Department for their service, and especially of Cruz and Taffy, whose dedication and warmth have touched so many hearts. Their work exemplifies the power of compassion, and we’re grateful for all they do to keep our community and beyond safe.

Santa Cruz Community Grant Program - Parks California
Parks California’s Santa Cruz Community Grant Program is designed to amplify diverse voices, ensuring that historically underrepresented communities and those who have had limited engagement with our parks are at the heart of the planning process. Parks California is seeking representatives to coordinate community engagement events to inform ongoing planning efforts for California State Parks.
Organizations rooted in and connected to communities of color and economically disadvantaged communities are encouraged to apply for funds to bring groups to State Beaches in the Santa Cruz District. These groups will share their ideas and views on how to create future coastal recreational facilities that increase equity in access and create inclusive park experiences; as well as facilities that are resilient with future coastal processes.
