The Historic Rose Garden in the Sacramento
Historic City Cemetery will be hosting a "Primping Party" to
weed and tidy up the cemetery plots in preparation for spring events.
Adult volunteers (nobody under 18) are needed on Saturday, April 7th,
from 9-noon. Please bring gloves and weeding tools if you have
them. If you don't know how to pull weeds, we will teach you! Come
enjoy our beautiful, historic cemetery and its award-winning rose garden, and

McKinley Park - Help Prune the Roses 🌹
Where: Corner of 33rd and H Streets

Yes, this is the rose garden shown in the
movie "Lady Bird"! Located at the corner of 33rd and H Streets,
and overseen by the non-profit Friends of East Sacramento, we welcome
volunteers of all ages, all twelve months of the year! Our 1 1/2 acre garden
has 1,200 roses and 8 perennial beds! In 2018, there will be monthly
volunteer events open to the public each 2nd Saturday of the month. Come
join us Saturday, May 12th from 9 am until noon to deadhead the
roses. We will be pruning off any spent roses and anything that wouldn't
look gorgeous in a bouquet! We'll be doing this for the rest of the year
up through November! Trainers will be on hand to show you how it's
done! We do have some supplies we loan out on a first come, first served
basis. If you can bring your own gardening gloves, bypass clippers and
buckets, please do, and we recommend wearing a hat or visor, and closed-toed
shoes are a must! Also, any minors attending the event will need to
bring a signed volunteer waiver form. Please come out and help us
keep the Rose Garden, beautiful, healthy and movie worthy! There are also
opportunities for individual volunteer orientations, once trained you can come

Help Increase Access To Recreational Activities For People With Disabilities
Volunteer with Access Leisure and Paralympic Sports to enhance life experience of people with disabilities. Access Leisure, a program of the City of Sacramento Department of Youth, Parks and Community Enrichment, provides sports, residential camping and outdoor education as well as social and fitness programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities. Volunteers must contact Access Leisure and fill out a volunteer form before coming to an event. Minimum age to assist with sports events is 14 and minimum age for social activities is 16.
You will
be working with youth and adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities.
The most important job our volunteers have is to interact positively and
socialize with participants in activities so that they and you will have fun. Volunteer
Responsibilities:
Interact in a positive manner with the participants; assist in activities with
the participants as necessary. Assist set up and clean up after.

Senior Congregate Meal Volunteers - Seeking
outgoing individuals who can assist with our daily lunch program and help

Community Days - Greetings from Fairytale Town!

are from 10:30am-4pm. The 2nd Saturday of each month February-November. The next Community Day will be

Volunteers are needed to help with the monthly Sacramento Adventure
Playground activities. Please wear closed toe shoes and clothing and
shoes that can get dirty. It will be a fun day
of building, playing, and making a mess!
While the Sacramento
Adventure Playground’s regular operating hours are designed for ages
7-15, the Playground opens up for children of all ages to come and play
on Community Days. Advance registration is not required.
Community Days are held on the second Saturday of the month (except
December and January) from 11 AM to 3 PM. Volunteers are needed for
these 2nd Saturday events.

Sacramento History Museum
The museum is looking for new docents
and docent assistants. The museum is located at 101 I Street in Old
Sacramento. Museum Docents lead a variety of educational programs for K-8
students. Docent Assistants help behind the scenes to ensure programs run

Foundation’s Save the Elms Program
(STEP) volunteer Citizen Scientists will monitor local elm trees for symptoms
of the problematic Dutch elm disease (DED), a fungal disease that has taken the
lives of thousands of Sac elms since the 1990's, over the summer using their GreenprintMaps application. Considering becoming a STEP Citizen Scientist? Learn

Powerhouse Science Center Public Programs Team
Come explore the engineering design process in Powerhouse Science Center’s brand-new Design Lab workshop!
Map-out, build, and test a prototype solution to a given design challenge. Volunteers have FUN engaging families with the engineering and innovation process, and learning how there’s no single “right” answer in engineering. We need volunteers daily to power this new design space. You will be our "guides on the side," helping our visitors as they solve engineering challenges ranging from building bridges and buildings, testing out aerodynamics, constructing electrical circuits, and even coding! Do you have a passion for STEM learning or museum education? The Public Programs team at the Powerhouse Science Center offers hands-on learning experiences throughout the year, often facilitated by our volunteer pool. Our goal is to make science and technology fun and accessible to all. You do not have to be a scientist to join us, all we ask is that you are excited to inspire tomorrow’s scientists today! Requirements: Must be aged 16 or older, available on weekends, willingness to work with visitors of all ages and backgrounds, personal or professional background in science, education, or museums is desired, but not necessary, ability to follow instructions from staff, ability to be flexible and creative when necessary, attend orientation and required skill builder workshops throughout the year. Summer at City Hall
The Summer @ City Hall (S@CH) program is a collaboration
between the City of Sacramento, Sacramento
City Unified School District (SCUSD),Twin Rivers School District (TRUSD), Natomas Unified School District (NUSD),
and WayUp Sacramento. The
program is open to all current high school Sophomores and Juniors of the 2017 -
2018 school year. Applicants must either attend a SCUSD, TRUSD, or NUSD high
school or live within the Sacramento City Limits to apply. Upon completion of
the program students will receive 5 high school credits and a stipend. The
S@CH program is a six-week summer learning experience that provides students
the opportunity to learn local government processes and how to become an active
member of their community. Students are supported throughout the program
by certified teachers that deliver a curriculum focusing on civic engagement
and youth development. This program is an exciting way to learn how to find
your inner voice and bring a youth perspective to real city issues and
concerns.

California State University, Sacramento, Student Internships
The
Office of Councilmember Eric Guerra (District 6) seeks a university student this summer who is
interested in being part of local government and getting firsthand
experience of what a career in public service is like. The intern
will assist with responding to constituent inquiries, design flyers, draft
documents, update social media platforms and help with events as well as other

Anthony Kirk Built Little Free Library at Truitt Bark Park

McClatchy High School senior Anthony Kirk had an opportunity
to kill two birds with one stone on March 3.
He got the job done.
With his construction of a Little Library for the Truitt
Bark Park on the corner of Q and 19th Streets, Kirk satisfied one part of
becoming an Eagle Scout as well as a requirement in order to graduate from
McClatchy.
"It's a weight off my shoulders," he said.
A Little Library is a small, wooden box which stands in a
public place and contains around two shelves stuffed full of books. Passersby
are encouraged to take a book and return it later and if possible, replace them
with books of their own. More...

Paid positions for teens, 16-20 years old. Lunch @ The Library Program Coordinators order, receive and distribute meals, ensure meal temperatures are maintained, serve meals to youth and teens, maintain a clean site, record and submit information, monitor adherence to library policies and procedures, hand out, collect and process evaluation surveys, ensure that volunteers have necessary materials, contact and schedule volunteers. The program runs from June 12 to August 3 (8 weeks), Tuesday - Friday, 12:30-3:00 pm. Positions are located at 13 library locations in Sacramento. The stipend for this position is $500. If you are interested in helping English language
learners gain confidence as they practice speaking English then consider
volunteering as the facilitator for one of our English Conversation Groups. The
conversation groups provide informal opportunities to meet other English
language learners and practice speaking English in a friendly, welcoming

As a group facilitator you will assist English
language learners build English skills and confidence as they practice
conversations that cover American culture and a range of subject areas
pertinent to daily life.
