Dear Third District Resident,
At the end of each May, we observe Memorial Day to honor and commemorate those who paid the ultimate price while serving in the United States Armed Forces. As Abraham Lincoln said in his second inaugural address, “Let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and orphan”.
In 1971, the United States first recognized the last Monday in May as a federal holiday known as Memorial Day. As a veteran myself, I am humbled by those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and honor them with great dignity. And, as we mourn our heroes, may we also remember the great bravery and sacrifice of the families left behind.
Riverside County offers an array of resources through our Veterans’ Services Department where those who have served and their dependents can receive aid. For example, the Department of Veterans’ Services partners with Riverside University Health System – Behavioral Health to provide mental health resources and counseling services. In May, we also recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, serving as an important reminder for us to reflect on the experiences of active, retired, and departed military personnel and their families.
If you or someone you know is in need of immediate support, I encourage you to contact the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988, Option 1 or texting 838255. This 24-hour service connects veterans in crisis and their loved ones with qualified, caring professionals from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mental Health Awareness Month
Since 1949, Riverside County has acknowledged May as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to bring awareness to the importance of mental health. In an effort to help promote a greater understanding of mental health, and to support the wellness and recovery of those living with mental illness, Riverside University Health System - Behavioral Health developed the “It’s Up to Us” campaign to empower individuals to talk openly about mental illness, recognize symptoms, utilize local resources and seek help. Throughout the month of May, they are conducting community outreach events to engage with the community and reduce the stigma of mental illness.
This year, the Third District’s mental health awareness fair will be at Central Park in Menifee on Thursday, May 11th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Military Appreciation Month
In 1999, Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month to ensure the nation was given the chance to show their appreciation for troops past and present. Each year, the President makes a proclamation designed to remind Americans of the important role that the United States Armed Forces have played throughout history. This month, let us reflect upon the sacrifices our military has made to protect our peace, liberty, and freedoms.

Join the Youth Advisory Council
The Third District is looking for high school students who are interested in participating on the Youth Advisory Council, which is part of the County’s Youth Commission. The Youth Commission was created to establish a partnership between the Board of Supervisors and County youth to better respond to and understand high school level needs when making policy decisions. The Commission serves as a County-wide student government, and provides advice, assistance, and recommendations on youth-related issues to the Board of Supervisors and County Departments. Additionally, the commission focuses on educational, recreational, and cultural needs of youth by working together to host meaningful events that are beneficial for them.

2023 Non-Profit Organization of the Year
This year, it is with great honor that I recognize Reaching New Heights Foundation as the Third District’s Non-Profit Organization of the Year. Reaching New Heights Foundation, founded by Sergeant Major Coker, provides services to assist veterans who are transitioning from active duty, or who have been incarcerated or experiencing homelessness. Through collaboration with local government agencies such as Riverside County Veteran Services, RNH's Foundation effectively builds pride and stability within each veteran they assist.

12th Annual Temecula Valley Xenia Hospitality Awards
Last month, I attended the 12th Annual Xenia Hospitality Awards presented by Visit Temecula Valley. Each year, the event recognizes tourism businesses and individuals who have displayed exemplary hospitality and service. At the event, I also had the honor to present certificates to 15 employees from across the valley who were recognized for their exemplary front-line hospitality with the 2022 Spotlight on Service Award. Congratulations to all the winners and honorees!

Menifee Better Together 2023
On Earth Day, I joined the City of Menifee, along with over 700 incredible volunteers to complete several community beautification projects at the 11th Annual Menifee Better Together celebration. Projects included Habitat for Humanity’s Senior Home Revitalization project, planting trees and plants in local parks, and much more. As I entered the world of public service by way of volunteer work, movements like these hold a special place in my heart. Thank you, City of Menifee, for hosting such a wonderful celebration to serve, preserve and unite the community. We are truly better together!

Menifee is hosting their annual Senior Health and Wellness Fair at Central Park on Saturday, May 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Time to Renew Your Medi-Cal Coverage
Did you receive a yellow envelope with a Medi-Cal renewal form last month? Medi-Cal coverage renewals begin in June 2023, and it’s important to check your information and report any new changes to your name, address, phone number and email address to ensure your Medi‐Cal recertification will reach you when it's time to renew. If beneficiaries receive a packet in April 2023 or later, and do not complete it, MC benefits may be discontinued no earlier than July 1, 2023. MC beneficiaries that auto-renew will receive a Notice of Action (NOA) to inform them of continued benefit determination.

Riverside Transit Agency’s New “Spin to be Seen” Signs
RTA has installed nearly 80 “Spin to Be Seen” reflective signs at bus stops in rural areas to help RTA customers get the attention of approaching bus drivers while waiting in areas that are dark. Rural areas that they have been installed in include Mead Valley, Romoland, Homeland, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar and Riverside. Youth Advisory Council Internship Recruitment
The Third District is looking for a candidate who is interested in the opportunity to serve as the Youth Advisory Council Coordinator. Tasks include mentoring high school aged students, coordinating Council activities, and overseeing all aspects of the YAC program within the Third District. Applicants must be currently enrolled/attending school at an accredited college or university, in a Bachelor's or Master’s program during the entire duration of the internship (two years).
