Scams Target Senior Population, Part 2
Taken from “CARE: When Trust is a Weapon,” by the County of Riverside Department of Public Social Services
As the population of older adults increase in Riverside County, we see more and more scammers trying to trick this population. This article is part two of a series on fraud that targets older adults. This week’s article focuses on Distraction Burglaries.
Distraction burglaries typically involve at least two suspects. One person will park in your driveway or near your home. Usually, a work truck will be visible. This person will claim to be from a company that provides repair services. They may attract you to the outside or basement of your house to check on items that need “repairs.”
Meanwhile, a second suspect enters your home and steals valuables.
Warning signs to be on the lookout for include:
- An unmarked work truck with no license plates or an obstructed view of the license plates;
- Repair workers who do not have ID or business cards; and
- A representative from a company that you don’t recognize or didn’t call.
If you believe you are being targeted by distraction burglars, be careful. Do not allow them into your house and do not go outside with them. Tell them you are too busy and ask for their business card so you can call them and schedule a better time. You can also call the police if you are really suspicious of them.

- Landscaping, weeding and repairing sprinklers at Trinity Lutheran Church;
- Landscaping at the Center for Spiritual Living;
- Cleaning benches throughout the valley;
- Picking up trash on the sides of various roads;
- Weeding the hill and removing broken concrete at the Ramona Bowl;
- Cleaning up four homes in Anza that recently burned down;
- Trimming branches at the home of an older couple; and
- Picking up old and ripe grapefruit off an older man’s property to help him save his trees.
Local organizations that participated in the event included the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Kiwanis Club of Hemet Valley and the Hemet-San Jacinto Exchange Club. In addition, the Riverside County Third District Supervisor’s office worked with Riverside County Waste Resources to donate trash bags and a large dumpster.
