Next week, we will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. I remember that morning well. I had been serving as a captain at Delta Airlines, so a number of people called my home anxious to know if I had been flying. After the third call, my wife and I both decided to turn on the television. We watched in horror as the second plane crashed and the towers fell. Immediately, we were aware of a sense of tragedy that would mark this day for our nation.

In the past 20 years, our world has changed so much because that one day. We must never forget the 2,977 innocent victims who lost their lives that day.

There will be a number of memorial events paying tribute to the 20th anniversary of September 11.

In Murrieta, there will be an observance ceremony at 5:40 a.m. at Town Square Park. Later, there will be an orchestral tribute, “Remembering 9/11,” at 6 p.m. at Town Square Park Amphitheater.

In Temecula, there will be a remembrance event at 4 p.m. at the Temecula Duck Pond, located on the corner of Rancho California and Ynez Road.

In Hemet, there will be a remembrance event at 11 a.m. at Hemet Historic Theater, located at 216 E. Florida Ave.

On September 11, many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. EDT, the time when the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. I encourage you to join your fellow Americans for a moment of quiet solidarity honoring those we lost.

Sincere regards,

Chuck Washington

The suicide of a loved one can have a profound impact on those left behind. Surviving the suicide of a loved one is a potentially life-changing ordeal that requires all of the resilience that a survivor can muster and all of the support that family members and the community can provide.

This webinar, called “Grief After Suicide: Finding Hope and Healing,” will cover topics such as the impact of suicide on individuals and families; myths of grief recovery; things that survivors can do to help themselves and when to seek professional help.

The webinar takes place Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. To register, use the following link: https://bit.ly/3yAiewl. For questions, email PEI@ruhealth.org.

Third District Spotlight: The French Valley Airport

Through a series of articles, we will highlight various benefits and services that General Aviation Airports provide to our community.

The French Valley Airport is located at 37600 Sky Canyon Drive in unincorporated Murrieta. Sitting on 261 acres of land, this airport offers a 6,000-foot-long asphalt runway and numerous services for pilots, including aircraft fuel sales, tie downs for aircraft parking and maintenance, airplane and helicopter flight training, charter flights and avionics repair.

Approximately 68 percent of the French Valley Airport’s operations are local, while a third of all flights in and out of French Valley are from pilots from other airports. Many come into the area to conduct business, while others are student pilots or recreational pilots coming to enjoy local wineries, restaurants, shopping, championship golf courses, resorts and spas.

Inside the airport’s terminal building, there is a comfortable and spacious lobby area for travelers and a full-service restaurant where locals enjoy great food while watching airplanes soar. The French Valley Airport is also home to over 20 locally owned businesses, including four flight schools that can provide training for beginners and all the way up to commercial pilot training. The French Valley Airport has so much to offer the community – we encourage you to come down and see it for yourself!
