Finding Vivian Maier Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts “In 2007, a trove of 100,000 photographic negatives was discovered at a Chicago estate auction. They had been taken by a woman named Vivian Maier who died in 2009. Her unposed street photography was worthy of comparison with the work of Helen Levitt and Lisette Model. This film portrait of Maier, by John Maloof, who discovered the work, is of someone impressively independent, implacably solitary and increasingly strange. Her personality, though, remains fundamentally elusive. The film puzzles over Maier’s never having shown her work. But Maier’s art speaks for itself. It was a window through which she could see without being seen. She saw the compositions in her viewfinder. She knew how good they were.” Mark Feeney, BostonGlobe. Coheed & Cambria Municipal Auditorium Although originally forming as a rock trio in 1995, New York's Coheed and Cambria officially took root in 2001, shedding their former name of Shabutie and embracing a fusion of progressive rock, emocore, and highly conceptual album themes. Vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez, guitarist Travis Stever, bassist Michael Todd and drummer Joshua Eppard issued their group's full-length debut, 2002's The Second Stage Turbine Blade, on the Albany-based Equal Vision Records. The band toured extensively for more than a year in support of the album, which was created as the second installment (although the band's first release) of a five-part fictional saga about the doomed marriage of two characters, Coheed and Cambria, whose children may or may not be infected with a serum whose power can destroy the universe. The Amory Wars, a detailed graphic novel series written by Sanchez himself, further explains the band's science fiction narratives. The Dance of Reality Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts “After making an indelible mark on pop culture with such provocations as Fando y Lis, and El Topo, the Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky seemed to disappear. But now, at a sprightly 85, Jodorowsky is back with one of his most lucid and personal films. The Dance of Reality, which recounts his childhood and was shot on the nondescript streets in Tocopilla, Chile, where he grew up, retains many of the themes of his early work—sex, religion, politics, identity, circus performers, the disfigured and disenfranchised. But this time, the director addresses the audience directly as a man who has overcome great tragedies in his life but has always found salvation in his art. That, more than anything else, is his religion.” Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald. Best Feature, Oslo Films from the South Festival, 2013. 2013 | Chile/France | 130 min. We Are the Best! Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts “Pipsqueak misfits in early 80s Stockholm, Bobo and Clara are the kind of friends who bond because everybody around them, from their parents to their teachers to their classmates, is impossibly stupid and wrong. In Lukas Moodysson’s exuberant We Are the Best!, the tweenage girls do the only thing they can: start a band. Not an Abbaesque pop outfit, but a slashing, crashing punk unit. Their gym teacher is a tyrant, soccer blows, so their first fiery two-minute anthem makes perfect sense. It’s called Hate the Sport. Their repertoire, raging and rebellious, goes from there. It’s not blood that flows through their veins, it’s nitroglycerin. The girls chant the Swedish title: “Vi är bäst! Vi är bäst!” And they’re right, they are.” Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer. 100 Japanese Cameras: 1925-2014 California Museum of Photography In the short period of time from the end of the Second World War until the 1970s, Japan’s photographic industry dramatically shifted the world’s camera production center from Europe and America to Japan. This exhibition examines the rise of the Japanese camera industry and highlights cameras from 1925 to the present day. The exhibition documents seven phases of the Japanese industry, from its prewar small cameras and European copies, to its present-day digital devices. Cameras have been chosen in each section both for their innovative technical significance and for their visual presence. Selections in each section represent both function and beauty. The exhibition displays the cameras, television ads for Japanese cameras from the 60s through the present, and early print media advertisements for Japanese cameras. A giant poster/catalog is available. Huff’s interest in the disconnection of two beings - living and non-living, is associated with his curiosity of whether “simpler times” can co-exist within or permeate in our “digital” life. He presents this paradox in a series of installations consisting of drawings, paintings and sculptures. Much like Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconsciousness, Huff focuses on animals as central figures recollected in trauma, myths, dreams, as well as in art. The connection of the two existences continues as Huff interrupts the animal’s habitat with sculptural objects and ultimately, placing them in juxtaposition within the domestic interior of a cultural institution.
