15 Favorite Things To Do

Pimpinela
Fox Performing Arts Center
Joaquín and Lucía Galán, better known as Pimpinela are an Argentine duo famous for singing romantic musical pieces and known for their original singing style. They have sold over 12 million records in Argentina and 25 million worldwide. Lucía Galán Cuervo and Joaquín Roberto Galán Cuervo, were born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Joaquín and Lucía are siblings of Spanish settler ancestry, more accurately of an Asturian father and Leonese mother, thus making them Criollos. At first they sang for family members and friends, but later they each pursued a solo career; Joaquín joined the group Luna de Cristal. In 1981 the duo recorded their first single together. It is well known that Joaquín was not eager to start with the group but was convinced to do otherwise by songwriter Luis Aguilé. In 1984 their song Olvídame y pega la vuelta became a No. 1 hit. Others followed, and as they continued to rise in fame, they developed a characteristic style.

Rocks In My Pockets
Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts
“In the new animated gem Rocks in My Pockets, Latvian-born artist and filmmaker Signe Baumane tells five fantastical tales based on the courageous women in her family and their battles with madness. With boundless imagination and a twisted sense of humor, she has created daring stories of art, romance, marriage, nature, business and Eastern European upheaval—all in the fight for her own sanity. Employing a unique, beautifully textured combination of papier-mâché stop-motion and classic hand-drawn animation (with inspiration from Jan Svankmajer and Bill Plympton), Baumane has produced a poignant and often hilarious tale of mystery, mental health, redemption and survival. Funded in part by Kickstarter backers.” Zeitgeist. Official Selection, Karlovy Vary Film Festival, 2014.

Finding Vivian Maier
Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts
“In 2007, a trove of 100,000 photographic negatives was discovered at a Chicago estate auction. They had been taken by a woman named Vivian Maier who died in 2009. Her unposed street photography was worthy of comparison with the work of Helen Levitt and Lisette Model. This film portrait of Maier, by John Maloof, who discovered the work, is of someone impressively independent, implacably solitary, and increasingly strange. Her personality, though, remains fundamentally elusive. The film puzzles over Maier’s never having shown her work. But Maier’s art speaks for itself. It was a window through which she could see without being seen. She saw the compositions in her viewfinder. She knew how good they were.” Mark Feeney, Boston Globe. Grand Jury Documentary Prize, Miami Film Festival, 2014.

Coheed and Cambria
Municipal Auditorium
Although originally forming as a rock trio in 1995, New York's Coheed and Cambria officially took root in 2001, shedding their former name of Shabutie and embracing a fusion of progressive rock, emocore, and highly conceptual album themes. Vocalist/guitarist Claudio Sanchez, guitarist Travis Stever, bassist Michael Todd, and drummer Joshua Eppard issued their group's full-length debut, 2002's The Second Stage Turbine Blade, on the Albany-based Equal Vision Records. The band toured extensively for more than a year in support of the album, which was created as the second installment (although the band's first release) of a five-part fictional saga about the doomed marriage of two characters, Coheed and Cambria, whose children may or may not be infected with a serum whose power can destroy the universe. The Amory Wars, a detailed graphic novel series written by Sanchez himself, further explains the band's science fiction narratives.

100 Japanese Cameras: 1925-2014
California Museum of Photography
In the short period of time from the end of the Second World War until the 1970s, Japan’s photographic industry dramatically shifted the world’s camera production center from Europe and America to Japan. This exhibition examines the rise of the Japanese camera industry and highlights cameras from 1925 to the present day. The exhibition documents seven phases of the Japanese industry, from its prewar small cameras and European copies, to its present-day digital devices. Cameras have been chosen in each section both for their innovative technical significance and for their visual presence. Selections in each section represent both function and beauty. The exhibition displays the cameras, television ads for Japanese cameras from the 60s through the present, and early print media advertisements for Japanese cameras. A giant poster/catalog is available.

When: July 19 – October 11, 2014
Where: California Museum of Photography, 3824 Main St., Riverside, CA 92501

Domesticating Disturbances
Sweeney Art Gallery
In Domesticating Disturbances, artist Nathan Huff transforms the ARTSblock’s gallery spaces into visual recitals combining the existence of animals and the austere presence of everyday objects as nostalgic and psychological tropes. Huff’s interest in the disconnection of two beings- living and non-living, is associated with his curiosity of whether “simpler times” can co-exist within or permeate in our “digital” life. He presents this paradox in a series of installations consisting of drawings, paintings and sculptures. Much like Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconsciousness, Huff focuses on animals as central figures recollected in trauma, myths, dreams, as well as in art. The connection of the two existences continues as Huff interrupts the animal’s habitat with sculptural objects and ultimately, placing them in juxtaposition within the domestic interior of a cultural institution.

When: June 24 - November 1, 2014
