The Cats of Mirikitani Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties Jimmy Mirikitani survived the trauma of internment camps, Hiroshima and homelessness by creating art. But when 9/11 threatens his life on the New York City streets and a local filmmaker brings him to her home, the two embark on a journey to confront Jimmy's painful past. An intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing powers of community and art. The film screening coincides with the 69th Anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings of August 6th and 9th in 1945. Join us as we continue our examination of art’s role in social justice in a community setting of engagement, expression, and remembrance. In the words of Mirikitani: “Make art, not war.” The Artswalk film series continues September 4th with Chicano Rock! The Sounds of East Los Angeles and October 2nd with Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin.

Audiences are intrigued by the film’s mysteries, teased into fascination. But it’s precisely the absence of answers that makes the questions endure. The Wind Will Carry Us bristles with secrecy, and much of its mystique is derived from the sensation that important information is being held just out of view. This is a deeply, patiently observational film, and the details Kiarostami emphasizes—a dung beetle struggling to haul away its bounty, an apple rolling haphazardly across an uneven floor, a bone floating down a stream—seem somehow profound in their banality, a mystery of ineffable beauty.” Calum Marsh, The Village Voice. Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts “He was found in the Sonoran desert by Arizona border patrols, just a 20-minute car ride away from Tucson, his fingers too dehydrated to get usable prints. The only clue? The name tattooed across his chest: Dayani Cristal. A combination of documentary and recreation of actual events, one half of the film consists of interviews, the other half follows Gael García Bernal as he retraces the man’s journey. The sequences with Bernal aren’t recreations. The people he meets along the way aren’t actors. The alternating sequences between straightforward investigation and lyrical road-trip help humanize the film and turn it into something far richer and more moving than a polemic.” Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald. When: September 26 – October 5, 2014 Where: Landis Performing Arts Center, 4800 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92506 For more information please visit www.performanceriverside.org Domesticating Disturbances Sweeney Art Gallery In Domesticating Disturbances, artist Nathan Huff transforms the ARTSblock’s gallery spaces into visual recitals combining the existence of animals and the austere presence of everyday objects as nostalgic and psychological tropes. Huff’s interest in the disconnection of two beings- living and non-living, is associated with his curiosity of whether “simpler times” can co-exist within or permeate in our “digital” life. He presents this paradox in a series of installations consisting of drawings, paintings and sculptures. Much like Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconsciousness, Huff focuses on animals as central figures recollected in trauma, myths, dreams, as well as in art. The connection of the two existences continues as Huff interrupts the animal’s habitat with sculptural objects and ultimately, placing them in juxtaposition within the domestic interior of a cultural institution.
