Circus Ugly
by Gabriel Rivas Gomez, Play Reading and Post-Performance
Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts
Circus Ugly is a play about the quest to embrace one's inner and outer "freak" while grappling with the haunting longing for normalcy. Razi, a young woman whose skin is made of paper, comes to town looking for the mother who abandoned her. There she meets a crippled homeless artist who paints secrets onto her skin, a bearded lady who runs a strip club catering to the "exotic," and her aspiring toady, along with several others. The play explores these characters' abnormalities, insecurities, truths and lies, and the manner in which all of these things are put up for trade or sale. Gabriel Rivas Gomez is a playwright whose work challenges the boundaries of traditional theater and has been called everything from surreal to abstract. His play Scar Tissue was published in The Best Short Plays of 2012-2011. Following the reading will be an audience Q&A with the playwright, led by Dr. Tiffany Ana Lopez, Professor of Theatre, and Tomas Rivera Endowed Chair in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán
Special Guests: Sinfonia Mexicana Mariachi Youth Academy
Fox Performing Arts Center
The first incarnation of the group Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán began in 1898 as a quartet, the group later emerged as one of the most celebrated mariachi groups and acquired national success upon its presentation at the inaugural celebration of President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1934. Mariachi Vargas became renowned as the definitive mariachi ensemble and its classic sound has won the group numerous awards and accolades, including the title of "World's Best Mariachi" since the 1950s. The band actively participates in international mariachi festivals in order to promote the pride of the genre and encourage young mariachis to pursue lifelong careers. Mariachi Vargas' appearance on Linda Rondstadt's well-received Canciones de Mi Padre won the vocalist a Grammy in 1987; she would later go on to tour with the group, exposing international audiences to the Mexican mariachi sound. Recently, the Houston Grand Opera turned to the ensemble's legendary leader, Jose "Pepe" Martinez, to write the score and collaborate with librettist Leonard Foglia in creating the world's first mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna ("To Cross the Face of the Moon"), which premiered to sold-out houses in Paris, Houston, Chicago and San Diego. Currently, Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan continues to record and tour internationally.

Be sure to ask John Muir questions about his adventures and enjoy a nibble of bread and a sip of tea - a John Muir staple. Jolivet Trio
Village Concerts
Village Concerts is pleased to announce the opening concert of the 2013-2014 season when the celebrated Jolivet Trio will be featured. Now entering its fifth season, Village Concerts continues to present the finest chamber music soloists and ensembles to Riverside music lovers. Bassoonist Judith Farmer will be joined by Susan Greenberg, flute, and Kyunghee Kim-Sutre, harp in a program that includes composers covering the historical gamut from the 17th to 21st centuries. The program opens with Vivaldi’s Sonata in A minor for Flute, Bassoon and Harp, and closes with Jolivet’s Pastorales de Noel for Flute, Bassoon and Harp, composed in 1943. We look forward to hearing why the trio chose to identify with composer Jolivet. Each artist is a seasoned, consummate professional and will be heard in solos and duets as well as selections for the complete trio. Of particular interest to pianists, we found, is the much loved Sonatine en Trio for Flute, Harp and Bassoon by Ravel (on the program), which was originally scored for piano solo. Sometimes heard as a trio for harp, flute and viola, the ensemble of flute, harp and bassoon promises to be a unique musical experience. Also present at the concert will be composer Gernot Wolfgang, who has often composed for his wife, Judith Farmer. She and Ms. Greenberg will be heard in his Duo for Flute and Bassoon No. 1, composed in 1992.

Blancanieves
Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts
A twist on the Snow White fairy tale that is set in 1920s Seville and centered on a female bullfighter. “Blancanieves, or Snow White, is enchantment at 24 frames a second: relocating the Grimm fairy tale to 1920s Spain, adding bullfighting and flamenco dancing and shooting in silent black-and-white. Pablo Berger’s strange, delightful movie is pure cinema, a demonstration of how much can be conveyed with a paintbrush of light, exquisite framing and body language. It looks like a forgotten classic, yet it’s fresh as morning. The film’s world and Alfonso de Vilallonga’s rapturous score create a world of sublime magical realism. The story’s Prince Charming is not one we could have anticipated, yet he’s heartbreaking perfection. Most films are experiences to be ignored. Blancanieves is a little classic to be treasured.” - Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune. 33 Awards including Grand Prize, Boulder Film Festival, 2013.
