Councilmember Philip Falcone: Ward 1 Quarterly Update

Ward 1 Falcone News Flash

Ward 1 Quarterly Update

Every few months, I like to share with you a quarterly update on what is happening in each of Ward 1’s four neighborhoods. While much more remains to do and the list of items making their way to City Council for approval and/or in the works is lengthy, this update is what is happening right now. The list is not exhaustive, rather, a snapshot of a moment in time. Let’s jump in!

Downtown

  • With the completion of the “staging” process, for the first time in 12 years, the dredging of Fairmount Lake has been set in motion to be completed early next year (weather permitting).
  • New rubberized flooring was installed for the playground at Fairmount – along with several other parks throughout the city.
  • Exciting new dining options are coming to the downtown area: Dapper Dining, The State, and Flemings.
  • The Request for Proposals for the Armory is now open! Industry experts have been invited to visit the site as we explore viable reuse options.

Eastside

  • The City Council approved funding for a new playground with full shade structures for Dario Vasquez Park.
  • Bordwell Park basketball courts have recently been removed and reconstructed with new concrete, hoops, and striping. A mural was added to the court—the first of its kind in the city.
  • As you drive by on 14th Street, you can see the progress being made for the Eastside School as structures have been demolished and debris cleared.

Northside

  • Phase 1 of construction of the Northside Agriculture Innovation Center is underway, including site grading, installation of onsite trails, tree plantings, irrigation and onsite utilities, and a community garden.
  • Repaving of the Reid Park parking lot has been completed!
  • Widening and repaving of Orange between Strong and Oakley is in the final stages; an overhaul of the 60 freeway offramp at Orange was also completed.

Wood Streets

  • Historic clay tile-topped monuments on Oakwood, Linwood, and Bandini were restored. Historic signage matching the signage from 1924 was hand-painted and will be installed this month.
  • Repaving and restriping were completed on Panorama in concert with multiple train safety gates and features added, as well as a train “quiet zone” to reduce train horn noise.
  • Three electrical box murals along Magnolia Ave are complete (Rosewood Pl, Bandini Ave, Terracina Dr), and three more are coming soon!
