Councilmember Philip Falcone: Ward 1 Quarterly Update

Ward 1 Falcone News Flash

Ward 1 Quarterly Update

Every few months, I like to share with you what is happening in each of Ward 1’s four neighborhoods. It has been a busy summer of your tax dollars at work—think about if you were rerouted while driving around town because of road work—that is what I am talking about! While much more remains to do and the list of items making their way to City Council for approval and/or in the works is lengthy, my update today is what is happening now. The list is not exhaustive, rather, it is a snapshot of a moment in time. Let’s jump in!

Downtown

  • Despite extreme heat and the challenges that it poses to new plantings, our city landscape crews are currently installing new landscaping on the Main Street Mall, parking garage 3 (Mission Inn and Market Ave), and Fire Station 1.
  • Lighting fixtures that have been broken and vandalized for five years around White Park are now replaced and shining brightly each night.
  • Diagonal crosswalks at University and Market Ave and Mission Inn and Market Ave were installed last week. This makes walking to and from popular destinations like the Main Library, the Fox, and the Civil Rights Institute a lot easier.
  • New vandalization-resistant trashcans were installed this week all over downtown. They replaced the former open-top trashcans.
  • Last weekend, pedal boats returned to Fairmount Park for the first time since 2019. They operate every weekend, noon-6 pm.

Eastside

  • This week, the City Council approved funding for a new playground with full shade structures for Dario Vasquez Park.
  • Bordwell Park basketball courts have recently been removed and reconstructed with new concrete, hoops, and striping. The Bordwell parking lot was also repaved last month.
  • We are finishing repaving and restriping on nearly a dozen residential streets—including Howard, Park, Grove, Cridge, Date, Iris, Woodbine, Denton and more. This is the largest batch of road repaving in any Ward 1 neighborhood!

Northside

  • This month work begins to grind tree stumps and fix twenty-three cracked and separating concrete benches near the Reid Park playground. New trees will be replanted next month in cooler weather.
  • Next week, repaving will begin on the parking lot in Reid Park.
  • Chicago Avenue between the Northside and the Eastside neighborhoods was repaved last month.

Wood Streets

  • Historic clay tile-topped monuments on Oakwood, Linwood, and Bandini are being restored now.
  • Repaving and restriping were completed last week on Palm, Rubidoux, Virginia, Kendall, and Tower Rd.
  • Next week, the City Council will vote on phase II of the Wood Streets sewer replacement project.
  • Bonus: Thank you, RUSD, for the recent repainting and beautification of Magnolia Elementary School!

It is evident we are putting your monies to good use to make our city a better place to live. We will keep it up!
