A Message From Your Council Member…

Happy Holidays! We have two excellent Holiday Celebrations taking place on the west end of Riverside this December.

La Sierra University will be hosting their 70th Annual Candlelight Concert on December 1st (7:30pm) and 2nd (4:00pm) at the La Sierra University Church (4957 Sierra Vista Avenue, Riverside 92505). I am very excited to be conducting the Hallelujah Chorus for the Saturday, December 2nd program at 4:00pm. Please support the La Sierra University Music Department by attending.  This event is open to the public and seats will be first come first serve.

On December 9th, we will be hosting our annual Las Posadas Winter Holiday Celebration taking place at Bryant Park from4:30pm-6:00pm.   Thank you to The Spanish Town Heritage Foundation, the Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Council Member Steve Adams and Assembly Member Sabrina Cervantes for co-hosting this year’s event with us.  Join us for this FREE community event.  We will have various resource booths, warm hot chocolate, treats, piñatas and a jumpers for the kids.

Coming 2018

Mark your calendar.  My next Community Ward 6 Update Meeting will take place on Thursday, January 11th at 6:30pm.  This meeting will be held at the Magnolia Police Station.  Come and hear first hand from your Council Member what 2018 holds for our residents. Future meetings will be held at various locations within the ward with City staff as needed to discuss upcoming projects and potential questions.

Improvements in Ward 6

During the past 4 years, our ward has received over $14 Million for street and sidewalk improvements.  However, additional improvements are still needed in the ward.  We will continue with additional funding over the next couple of years to fund multiple neighborhood projects throughout the ward.  This funding is primarily made available through Measure Z and the state gas tax.  During 2018, the construction of multiple sidewalks will be taking place in the Arlanza neighborhood and a few aging water main lines will be replaced in the Arlanza and Ramona neighborhoods.  After the first of the year, construction will start on the Cochran storm drain located between Jones and Skofstad.  Construction will also soon start on additional restaurants located on Magnolia at Park Sierra.  We will see the opening of Tokyo Joe’s, Blaze Pizza and one or two other proprietors.

Housing First Meeting

As you may recall due to unforeseen circumstances we had to postpone our Housing First Meeting originally scheduled in November.  The new rescheduled date for this Housing First meeting is December 18th at 6:30pm.  It will take place at the Home Front at Camp Anza Community Center (5797 Picker Street).  Housing First is an approach to quickly and successfully connect individuals and families experiencing homelessness to permanent housing. Supportive services are offered to maximize housing stability and prevent return to homelessness as opposed to addressing predetermined treatment goals prior to permanent housing entry.  Please join us on December 18th to learn more. Parking will be available on the street and at the Arlanza Library.  Parking within the complex will not be permitted and is reserved only for residents of this complex.

La Sierra/Collett Update

As promised, the City of Riverside’s Community Development Department will be hosting a meeting to update residents on the proposals submitted for the La Sierra/Collett site. Please keep in mind, a PROPOSAL is NOT an approved project.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 6:30pm.  It will be held at the La Sierra Senior Center located at 5215 La Sierra Avenue, #B, Riverside. Please join us to hear directly from City staff the factual information pertaining to this property.

As of this writing, the 2 submitted proposals are still under review.  We expect the potential developer(s) will be at this meeting to make their community presentation.

Please attend as this will give the members of the community the opportunity to provide their input and ask questions.
