A Message From Your Council Member…

We have sucessfully continued our Kid’s Produce Market at Arlanza Elementary with the partnership of Feeding America. The Kid’s Produce Market is a tremendous resource for students at Arlanza Elementary School. Feeding America provided 10,000 pounds of fresh produce not only to all the students in attendance, but also to parents, community members, volunteers and Alvord Unified staff.  Students are happy to receive the fresh produce to share healthy food options with their families at home. We would like to thank the monthly volunteers from Alvord High School, AUSD parents and interns from our local universities.  THANK YOU to Feeding America and their remarkable staff for making the Kids’ Produce Market a success every month.

Community Development Block Grant Meeting

A reminder on our annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) meeting taking place this November 1st at 6pm, Arlanza Community Center (8267 Philbin Avenue). Your input will help us propose projects needed in low to moderate- income neighborhoods.  CDBG funds must be used for projects in low to moderate income neighborhoods only.  The CDBG program provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. This is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that works to provide services to the most vulnerable in our communities.  For more information contact the Community & Economic Development Department at (951) 826-5649 or visit www.RiversideCa.gov/grants.

RPU Community Meeting

Please join us on November 9th at 6pm, La Sierra High School Library for Ward 6 & 7 RPU Joint Community Meeting.  RPU has submitted a proposal to the Board of Public Utilities and City Council for an electric and water utility rate increase over the next 5 years. RPU needs additional revenues to replace aging infrastructure in order to protect the public health and safety of Riverside’s homes and businesses. RPU has kept rates frozen for the past 7 years to help our customers recover from the Great Recession. The Riverside Public Utilities’ Department will be conducting community meetings over the next few weeks to update residents on current projects, potential proposed rate increases and to voice the concern that delaying a rate increase puts our community at risk.  The main concern is that delays in rate increases will lead to higher costs when critical systems fail.  The City Council will vote on the proposed rate increase in January 2018, so it is important that you attend to become informed and provide input on the proposal.

Alvord CARES Walk-A-Thon

The Alvord Unified School District’s “Alvord CARES” Committee will be hosting a community walk fundraiser to raise awareness of students in need of safe and good meals year around. The goal of the event is to bring the community together and collect food and monetary donations for Alvord CARES.  Support our efforts by joining us for this important walk on November 4th at 9am, La Sierra High School.  For more information in making a can food or monetary donation prior to the event, please contact Anh Nguyen at (951) 509-5165 or email anh.nguyen@alvord.k12.ca.us .

Update on La Sierra Pipeline

Western Municipal Water District is installing five miles of underground pipeline along La Sierra Avenue as part of an capital improvement project.  This $36 million project will bring safe and reliable drinking water to our region. Construction work began in June 2017 and will continue through winter 2018. Western Municipal Water District officials have announced that temporary paving work will take place on La Sierra Avenue and continue through Thursday, Nov. 2, between Arizona Avenue and Middleborough Road as part of the La Sierra Pipeline project construction. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, or allow extra travel time if an alternate route is not an option, and always follow traffic control devices when in the area. For more info, please call (951) 571-7261.

Las Posadas de Riverside

Mark your calendar for our Ward 6’s annual Las Posadas Winter Holiday Celebration taking place on Saturday, December 9th.   The Spanish Town Heritage Foundation, the Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Council Member Steve Adams and Assembly Member Sabrina Cervantes will be co-hosting this year’s event with us.  This fun and FREE community event will feature various resource booths, warm hot chocolate, treats, piñatas and a jumpers for the kids.

La Sierra/Collett Update

The Request for Proposal (RFP) issued by the City of Riverside’s Community Development Department pertaining to the La Sierra/Collett property has now closed and the City received two proposals. Staff and two residents from the immediate neighborhood will review each proposal.  The results will be presented at the next community meeting where those in attendance will be able to provide their input.  Further information will be provided at our next La Sierra/Collett Community Meeting tentatively scheduled for December.  Additionally, any information you hear being disseminated within the community about this site being used for homeless services is factually false.  This site will not be used for a homeless shelter.
