A Message From Your Council Member…

Happy New Year!  We ended 2016 with two great opporunties in Ward 6.  The first was a wonderful Christmas “Las Posadas de Riverside” celebration in partnership with the Spanish Town Heritage Foundation and our Park, Recreation and Community Services Department.   The second was our 3rd Annual Running Shoe Program at Wells Middle School.  We once again partnered with the Riverside Police Officers’ Association and the Running Center to sponsor 100 students in Ward 6 to take home quality running shoes this Christmas season.  Thank you to all our partners!

Christmas Tree Reminder: Christmas trees will be collected with the normal trash pick-up until Jan. 13, 2017. Please follow these procedures for proper disposal of your tree:

  • Remove the stand, ornaments and decorations
  • Cut your tree into 4 foot lengths and place in your green container or place on the curb next to your green container
  • Flocked trees are not greenwaste and should be cut into 4 foot lengths and placed in or next to the brown container on the curb
  • If tree is placed in green or brown container, the lid of the container must close in order to receive service

Citizen’s Academy

The Riverside Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizen Academy, which begins February 16, 2017 and continues through April 20, 2017. Recruitment is now open through January 31, 2017.  Most sessions will be held in the Riverside Police Department’s Community Room, 10540 Magnolia Avenue, Suite B, on Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This course is designed to give citizens an overview of the department's operational methods. It will provide insight as to how police personnel perform their duties. Class size is limited, and seats will be given on a first come first serve basis. Applications will only be accepted via the RPD website. Applicants also must be able to pass an informal background check. All sessions are in a classroom setting and do not require any physical training. Applicants must live, work, or attend school in the City of Riverside. To apply for the Citizen Academy or for more information, please visit the RPD website at www.rpdonline.org or contact Police Program Coordinator Jennie Pauli at 951-826-5235.

Tax Update

The City of Riverside will have some sales tax changes during the 2017 year due to state changes and Measure Z.  Riverside's 1% sales tax increase (Measure Z), which passed in the November 2016 General Election, will take effect on April 1, 2017.   The Measure Z sales tax increase is expected to raise between $48 and $50 million annually to potentially pay for a number of City services.  These services are expected to include but are not limited to safety services such as police and firefighter protection, renovating Riverside's roads and infrastructure, and modernizing local parks, among other City programs.  Below is some information regarding the current passage of Measure Z and other sale tax changes.  We hope this information will be helpful for your budgeting in the upcoming months:

  • January 2017 Sales Tax Decrease: Riverside now has a 7.75% sales tax rate that became effective January 1. Riverside's sales tax rate was 8 percent. As of January 1, 2017, the City's sales tax rate was reduced to 7.75 percent. This 0.25 percent reduction is due to the expiration of a temporary tax approved by voters on Proposition 30 in 2012.
  • April 2017 Sales Tax Increase: Riverside will have an 8.75% sales tax rate effective April 1 reflecting the Measure Z increase.

Tyler Street Update

Thank you for your patience as we complete the Tyler Street Widening Project.  Progress was delayed the past few months due to utility relocations by non-city providers, but those have now all been completed. This January, we are scheduled to finish the median curb rough and fine grade, install concrete median curbs, grade the new North/South bound lanes and start landscape improvements. In February, we will complete the base pave for the North/South bound lanes, complete landscaping improvements and finish the final cap paving, traffic loops, and striping.  We hope the rain will not delay the expected completion date of March 1st, 2017!
