Princess

Program Description:

The Guardian Princess Alliance is pleased to collaborate with the Riverside Public Library - La Sierra Branch to offer a special event with Princess Mariana, the first-ever Latina Princess. Princess Mariana is part of a new generation of princesses who is featured in a BILINGUAL children's book launched in May 2016. Princess Mariana is the "Guardian of the Seas," who helps protect marine life from the harmful pollutants dumped in the oceans. Through an interactive live reading, songs and music with Princess Mariana we engage with children and cultivate a new perspective on environmental consciousness, cultural diversity, and self empowerment. Children, parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to wear their favorite costumes. Dress up as a superhero, princess or your favorite storybook character.

Presenter’s Vitae:

The idea of the Guardian Princesses was first conceptualized by Professor Setsu Shigematsu, Associate Professor in the Media and Cultural Studies Department at University of California Riverside. We aim to promote peace, diversity and education by positively transforming the cultural meaning of the princesses into superheroines who work together to protect the people and the planet. GP is an organization that promotes cultural, racial, and gender diversity in children’s literature and media as well as raising awareness on environmental issues. We believe our books advance children’s knowledge in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Our stories also combine teaching ethical principals with the practical imperatives to help parents, teachers, and children meet Common Core State Standards. Ultimately, we believe that the princess should be a positive role model whose power does not lie in beauty and royalty, but in knowledge and positive action that promotes a harmonious relationship with other living beings and the planet.
