A Message From Your Council Member…

“Literacy is one of the greatest gifts a child could receive.” Jen Selinsky

We are excited to announce that this August we are partnering with the Spanish Town Heritage Foundation and our Parks, Recreation and City Services Department to bring Riverside-Ward 6 “Books con Amigos” Books with Friends.  This is a Bilingual Literacy Event created specifically for children living in the surrounding communities of Arlanza and La Sierra. Join us August 6, 2016 from 9am to 1pm and is intended to promote reading for children and families in the area.  We are working on securing local Authors to do LIVE book readings throughout the event.  “Books con Amigos” has been well received by many sponsors and partners that have committed to bringing books in various languages to give away to children that day!  We also have an organization that will be conducting FREE eye exams on-site.  In addition, Alvord Unified Child Nutrition Services will be assisting parents with their Free and Reduced Meal Applications for the new school year.  Mark your calendar and visit our booths that day to enter into our Backpack Opportunity Drawings that will be held throughout the event!

4th of July Fireworks Show

We are pleased to announce that our 4th of July Firework Celebration will be taking place as scheduled at La Sierra Park. The annual 4th of July fireworks show at La Sierra Park had been previously recommended for cancellation this year due to budget constraints. In an effort to preserve the show, myself and Council Member Burnard offered to donate money from our respective council budgets to make up roughly half of the $28,000 cost of the show. City staff was able to find funds for the other half of the required amount.

“The La Sierra fireworks show is a great family event, and its value greatly outstrips the cost of producing the show. I’m pleased that we are going to continue providing this opportunity for our community to gather together on our nation’s birthday.”

-Council Member Jim Perry

Note: The City of Riverside Supports Fourth of July Celebrations with Caution - Residents Urged to Celebrate Safely.  The City of Riverside Fire Department welcomes this upcoming Fourth of July by encouraging safe celebrations and reminding residents that all fireworks are illegal in the City of Riverside. The Fourth of July is a day for celebration, but not at the expense of safety.  Residents are encouraged to attend the City's 4th of July Spectacular Aerial Fireworks Shows at La Sierra Park or Mt. Rubidoux.
