Wildfires don’t behave randomly, and the steps we take as homeowners and communities truly matter. In a recent interview, Katie Low, wildfire ecologist and Statewide Coordinator for the UC ANR Fire Network, shared what residents in Placer County should understand about wildfire behavior in Sierra Nevada forests and what research shows actually reduces risk.
The conversation explores how fuels reduction treatments such as prescribed fire, thinning and targeted grazing change fire behavior, why embers are the leading cause of home loss, and how home hardening and defensible space work together to protect neighborhoods.
Most importantly, Katie emphasizes that small, practical actions taken at the home level add up to stronger, more fire-adapted communities.
