Caltrans Traffic Alert | State Route 49 Construction Project Updates for Next Week

State Route 49 Construction Update for Gold Country Corridor

Caltrans is reminding motorists of various lane closures in multiple locations along State Route 49 as several projects continue in Placer County.

Here is the breakdown for next week:

Safety Barrier Project

  • Extended lane reduction at Lone Star Road, intersection scheduled to return to normal operations with the new roundabout configuration in place by 3 p.m. Monday, September 8.
  • Northbound between Lorenson Road/Florence Lane and Lone Star Road, various lane closures are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, September 8 through Friday, September 12 and from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday, September 8 through Thursday, September 11.
  • Southbound between Lone Star Road and Lorenson Road/Florence Lane, various lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, September 8 through Friday, September 12 and from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday, September 8 through Thursday, September 11.
  • Final extended lane reduction at Lone Star Road
    • Crews will reduce northbound and southbound SR 49 to one lane in each direction from 6 a.m. Friday, September 12 through 3 p.m. Monday, September 15.
    • Movement around the roundabout will be limited at various times and only allow right-hand turns onto SR 49. Motorists will need to detour northbound or southbound to the next legal U-turn as needed.

Sidewalk Gap Closure Project

  • Southbound between Dry Creek Road and Bell Road, various lane closures are scheduled from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday, September 8 through Thursday, September 11. Work is scheduled to end for the week by 7 a.m. Friday, September 12.

The extended lane closures will help to minimize the duration of the work and improve workers’ safety. Motorists may experience delays between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on traffic volumes. The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events.

Roundabout Construction to Resume

At the Intersection of State Route 49 and Lincoln Way/Borland Ave.

Caltrans is alerting motorists that construction is scheduled to resume on the $11.4 million American Canyon Roundabout Project along State Route 49 at the intersection of Lincoln Way/Borland Avenue on Wednesday, September 10.

Crews will begin work to relocate the sewer line before constructing the new roundabout and scheduled to complete work by the end of the year. Intermittent traffic control with a flagger may be necessary at times depending on construction activity between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Motorists should anticipate delays between 10 to 15 minutes, which may increase during peak commute hours. The schedule is subject to change or be delayed due to weather, availability of materials or other unexpected events.

The project was paused in July 2024 after unforeseen permit issues. Caltrans and the City of Auburn worked continuously during this time with Union Pacific Railroad and received the necessary permit on August 27, 2025.

Lamon Construction Co., Inc. of Yuba City is the prime contractor for the project, which will realign two reversing curves to improve sight distance and safety by reducing the sharpness of each curve. Additionally, the existing traffic signal at the Lincoln Way/Borland Avenue intersection will be replaced with a roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow.
