Responsible Growth: Reinvesting in Our Communities, Together

Cindy

As we plan for the future of Eastern Placer, it’s clearer than ever that thoughtful reinvestment is essential to sustaining the quality of life, improving our built infrastructure, and protecting our environment that we so highly value. The cost of maintaining and improving public services, addressing infrastructure needs, and protecting our environment continues to rise faster than property tax revenue or other general funding sources. If we want to continue providing the existing services , while also increasing our efforts in workforce housing, creating healthy forests, parking enforcement and transportation infrastructure, we must carefully invest in responsible and sustainable growth.

That is why local governments support projects that reinvest in communities and increase revenues to match the demand and costs for increased services.  A recent and meaningful example is the final settlement on the Village at Palisades Tahoe Specific Plan. After more than a decade of legal challenges and public dialogue, this revised, scaled-back project reflects the feedback and values shared by our community.

The agreement, reached between Palisades Tahoe, Keep Tahoe Blue, and Sierra Watch, reduces the size and scope of the original proposal, eliminates plans for an indoor waterpark, protects open space in Shirley Canyon, and prevents any additional development within the plan area for 25 years. These changes were shaped by a renewed commitment from the project’s leadership to work collaboratively and adhere to legal and community expectations. Their continued investments in local housing, transportation improvements, and year-round recreation help address some of our region’s biggest challenges.

You can read both the joint statement and my full remarks on this important milestone below:

I remain committed to ensuring transparency, community involvement, and accountability as we move forward. This agreement is a powerful example of how we can grow in a way that reflects our values, protects our environment, and supports the long-term sustainability of Eastern Placer.

In service,
Cindy Gustafson
Placer County Supervisor, District 5

PLACER APPROVES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVES TO SPUR NEW LODGING

Tahoe EDC

Placer County is moving forward with two key economic development incentives aimed at revitalizing the Tahoe City and Kings Beach town centers in North Lake Tahoe. As part of its North Lake Tahoe Economic Development Incentive program, the county approved an 80% transient occupancy tax rebate for the remodel of the Evo hotel in Tahoe City, and entered into an option agreement with Kingsbarn for the proposed 39 North hotel and condo project in Kings Beach. These efforts aim to encourage new lodging development in the region, where no major hotel projects have been built since the 1960s. The Kingsbarn proposal, which has been revised to reflect community input, still requires environmental and public review before final approval. LEARN MORE

Since 2022, the Lease to Locals program has committed over $1 million to convert 114 properties into rentals for local employees, housing 270 people, including 213 workers and 38 children. The Board of Supervisors recently approved $500,000 in additional funding and updates to program guidelines to further support families. The county’s Workforce Housing Preservation Program has also distributed $1.5 million in incentives, helping 21 local workers purchase 14 deed-restricted homes.
