Affordable Housing in Focus as Fire Season Nears

Cindy

As we step into May, we’re proud to join in recognizing Affordable Housing Month, a time to highlight the critical importance of housing that is safe, stable, and attainable for everyone in our community.

Earlier this week, the Placer County Board of Supervisors officially proclaimed May 2025 as Affordable Housing Month in Placer County. The proclamation reaffirms our collective commitment to finding innovative solutions and working together to expand housing opportunities for all.

Affordable housing continues to be one of the most pressing issues facing our region. In Eastern Placer, we’ve seen firsthand how the lack of workforce housing affects not only our residents but also our local economy and overall community well-being. While high construction costs and regulatory hurdles remain challenges, meaningful progress is underway.

Through key updates to the Tahoe Basin Area Plan and ongoing efforts from the TRPA Tahoe Living Working Group, we’re working to streamline permitting and support achievable housing development. These changes are helping create a more predictable path forward for housing projects, making it more feasible for local builders to bring their ideas to life. The county’s upcoming Housing Action Plan, expected to go before the Board of Supervisors in June, will outline long-term strategies to increase diverse housing options across Placer.

This month also features a variety of Affordable Housing Month events, including the North Tahoe Housing Solutions Tour on May 14 and a Virtual Home Buyer Webinar on May 30, helping residents better understand available resources and opportunities. Visit our Affordable Housing Month page to explore the full list of events and initiatives.

While housing remains front and center, May is also National Wildfire Awareness Month. As we prepare for another fire season, now is the time to take proactive steps to protect your home and neighborhood. We encourage you to visit ReadyPlacer.org for tools and resources, such as burn permit info, the low-cost chipping program, and how to “know your zone” for emergency evacuation planning.

Looking ahead, we hope you’ll join us at our Eastern Placer Town Hall on fire preparedness, taking place June 17 from 5:30–7:30 PM at the North Tahoe Event Center. More details will be shared soon, but for now, please mark your calendar and help us spread the word!

Thank you for staying engaged, and for being a part of the ongoing efforts to make Eastern Placer a safe, vibrant, and welcoming place for all.

In service,
Cindy Gustafson
Placer County Supervisor, District 5
