March is National Nutrition Month, and this year's theme is "Food Connects Us." Food connects many of us, from time with our friends and family to learning to prepare a new meal. Connect with others this month by checking out one of the Senior Cafes put on by Seniors First.
Healthy eating is important at every age. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified alternatives. When deciding what to eat or drink, choose options that are full of nutrients and limited in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Check out these tips and the nutrition needs of people ages 60+.
Unique Nutrition Needs of People Ages 60+
- With age, you may lose some of your sense of thirst. Drink water often.
- Get enough protein during your day to maintain muscle mass.
-
Focus on the nutrients you need, including potassium, calcium, vitamin D, dietary fiber, and vitamin B12.
- The body's ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease with age. Taking certain medicines can also lower absorption. Eating enough protein and fortified foods can help the body get the vitamin B12 it needs.
- Enjoy a variety of foods from each food group to help reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
