CELEBRATE SAFELY & ENJOY A GREAT INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Wishing you a memorable Independence Day filled with joy and gratitude. The Fourth of July commemorates the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation when 56 members of the Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence. This historic document, declaring, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” remains a powerful reminder of our nation's founding principles.

As we celebrate, let’s remember the leadership, courage, and sacrifices that so many made throughout our nation’s history to first establish and then defend our democracy. Let’s make this Fourth of July memorable by counting our blessings, truly appreciating our freedom, and celebrating our democracy!

This year, District 5 has a fantastic lineup of events for everyone to enjoy:

Auburn
Annual Auburn Family Fourth of July

 • 10:30 a.m.: Parade through downtown. Keep an eye out for the District 5 Car and wave hello!

 • 4:30 p.m.: New and improved 4th of July Festivities at Railhead Park. Enjoy live entertainment, vendors, kids' activities, delicious food, and Auburn's finest fireworks!

Foresthill
Foresthill Annual 4th of July 
• 10 a.m.: Celebrate under the majestic setting of Leroy E Botts Park with live music, kids' games, and a variety of food.

Colfax
3rd of July Celebration
• 2 p.m.: Main Street Alley comes alive with fun activities, delicious food, and fireworks. 

Tahoe 
Tahoe City 4th of July Celebration

 • 12:00 p.m.: Enjoy live music, family fun, and a spectacular drone show.

 • July 5th: Give back by joining the post-celebration cleanup!

As you gather with friends and family, please remember to keep each other and our communities safe. Continue to stay cautious through fire season and remain vigilant. Remember fireworks are illegal in unincorporated Placer County.

HAVE FUN THIS FOURTH OF JULY BUT DON’T FORGET: FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL

Fireworks are not permitted anywhere in the unincorporated areas of Placer County except when approved by the County and executed by a pyrotechnic vendor licensed by the California State Fire Marshal. Due to Placer County’s vulnerability to damaging wildfires, the Board of Supervisors has adopted an ordinance prohibiting fireworks of all types, including those ‘safe and sane’ fireworks intended for home use that are sold at roadside stands in Placer County and throughout the region. HIDDEN FALLS EXTREME WEATHER CLOSURE

Hidden Falls

Due to excessive heat and fire danger, the park will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, July 2, 2024 through Friday, July 5, 2024.

The determination to close Hidden Falls is made in conjunction with the issuance of fire-related warnings issued by the National Weather Service and in consultation with CalFIRE personnel. LEARN MORE

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVES BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2024-25

With an eye on balanced growth, the Placer County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution today to formally adopt the Fiscal Year 2024-25 Budget. The budget represents the culmination of a comprehensive countywide effort to develop a budget that recognizes future obligations, protects the county from potential foreseeable impacts and maintains critical services for our communities. The budget’s operating funds total $1,223,744,843, which reflects a 4.2% decrease compared to the FY 2023-24 budget and includes $52.2 million for capital projects.  The growing economic landscape in Placer County has had a significant impact on this year’s budget priorities, particularly the trend toward urbanization in West Placer. Population growth anticipated over the coming years is expected to put increased pressure on demand for county services in both the long and short term. To meet these demands, the county is committed to prudent operational and financial planning as defined through its “Getting Growth Right” initiatives and economic policies.  LEARN MORE


PLACER UNVEILS CONCEPT FOR ECLECTIC MARKETPLACE IN NORTH AUBURN

Government Center

The future vision for Placer County’s government center campus in North Auburn includes a reimagined destination center anchored by achievable housing and an indoor/outdoor marketplace that celebrates Placer County’s home-grown goods and services. The Placer County Facilities Management team presented an updated vision that further refines potential private development opportunities under the Placer County Government Center Master plan, including artists’ renderings showcasing the potential for approximately 50 acres of future development. Key elements of the updated vision include a pedestrian promenade with shops, restaurants, production-to-consumption facilities (such as wineries, bakeries, and breweries), parks, and flexible commercial space along with mixed-income housing and other amenities. FORESTHILL BRIDGE TO UNDERGO FEDERALLY FUNDED TESTING

Foresthill Bridge

The Foresthill Bridge will soon undergo ultrasonic testing of 282 weld points as part of a national effort to provide preventative maintenance and quality assurance to bridges built with a similar type of steel. The Placer County Board of Supervisors took action to approve a combined $6.3 million in contracts – funded 80% with federal funds from the Federal Highway Bridge Program and 20 percent by California’s SB1 Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account funds. Like many bridges, Foresthill’s butt welds - welds that have two plates of steel joined together - were constructed with a steel known as T-1. Recently, there was a bridge in Ohio where inspectors closed a bridge due to a suspected issue with T-1 steel. That bridge inspection prompted the Federal Highway Administration to launch a program to ensure bridge safety across the country on similar bridges. LEARN MORE


PLACER COUNTY BRINGS RELIABLE BROADBAND TO RURAL HOMES AND BUSINESSES, WITH MORE TO COME

Broadband

Over 1,760 more rural Placer County households and businesses now have reliable broadband services, with more on the way - marking a significant step in the county's ongoing expansion efforts.  Launched by the IT Department in 2020, the Broadband Equity Program prioritizes expanding broadband services to over 17,000 underserved homes and businesses in rural areas in Placer County. “Beyond enhancing the quality of life by providing essential internet services, these initiatives serve as a catalyst for economic growth,” said Placer County Information Technology Department Director Jarrett Thiessen. “Reliable broadband empowers businesses and entrepreneurs in rural regions to fully utilize digital tools and platforms, fostering a thriving and connected Placer County.” LEARN MORE


TRASH DUMPING THREATENS FREE CARDBOARD DROP-OFF BINS

Placer County has become aware that illegal dumping at the Bell Road free cardboard recycling drop-off bins has increased, as has use of the bins for trash disposal. Dumping at the site creates a public nuisance and health and safety concern - as well as a considerable expense for our hauler, Recology.  Misuse of this site could result in bin removal. Ensure this free and convenient community resource is preserved by properly disposing of trash through your regular curbside service, at the transfer stations, or at the Western Placer Waste Management Authority. Illegal dumping will be enforced pursuant to Placer County Code Section 8.16.420Placer County Code Section 8.16.150. Thank you for your cooperation! 


FREE HISTORY ALL SUMMER! PLACER COUNTY MUSEUMS ANNOUNCES HERITAGE TRAIL TOUR DATES

Placer Museums

Placer County Museums is excited to welcome everyone back to the Heritage Trail Museums Tour, celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, with museums throughout Placer County offering free admission on select dates all summer. A total of 28 museums and historical sites from Roseville to North Lake Tahoe are participating in this year’s trail tour, June 1 through Aug. 31. “We are delighted to welcome everyone back to explore Placer County’s rich history with the Heritage Trail Museums Tour,” said Ralph Gibson, Placer County Museums administrator. “This is a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors of all ages to experience the unique stories and cultural heritage of our region.” LEARN MORE


HIKE SAFELY THIS SUMMER

Heat Warning

As the temperatures rise and summer heat begins, Placer County is sharing this trail safety video advising residents to take safety precautions when hiking Placer County trails this summer. If the current heat doesn’t derail your plans, our first responders are urging hikers to get out early in the morning and take shorter trails to finish their hike before the main heat of the day. Command Training

Over 100 first responders from around the Tahoe Basin and western Placer participated in the Eastern Slope Unified Command Training. The annual event featured three training scenarios customized to the Tahoe region. WATCH VIDEO
