June 2024

Greetings,

On May 16 of this year, I was pleased to speak at the ribbon cutting of the reconstructed sports field at Newcastle Elementary School.

The field had been uncared for and dormant for more than 20 years. Newcastle School Superintendent, Denny Rush, (now retired) contacted me in early 2023 to discuss the opportunity for the district to work with Andy Fisher, Placer County Parks Administrator to restore the field, which would allow the students to enjoy the field as well as local youth sports teams throughout Newcastle, Loomis, Penryn, Ophir, and other areas in the region.

The District and Placer County Parks developed an agreement whereby Placer County would provide the funding to improve the two-acre parcel of land and the district would maintain the field and offer the use of the field to the community.

The field will be available for school events during the day and evening and for community youth sports activities during non-school hours.

There has been a shortage of playing fields throughout the area for our young athletes, both boys and girls and the Newcastle Sports Field will allow for more youth to play.

I want to thank our former Newcastle Elementary School Superintendent Denny Rush for her leadership in initiating this project and for bringing it to completion. I also want to thank Sean Healy, Newcastle Elementary School Superintendent, the trustees of the Newcastle School District, and especially Sue Wesselius, Project Manager, for their commitment to this amazing project.

And lastly, I want to thank Andy Fisher, Placer County Parks Administrator; Dan Fonner, Parks Superintendent, and all the Parks staff for their collaborative approach in making this happen.

Warm Regards,

Supervisor Jim Holmes
