On April 10, 1940, first lady Eleanor Roosevelt stopped by the Sleepy Hollow Lodge near Colfax for a meal on her way to Reno, Nevada, from Sacramento. She was accompanied by her personal secretary, Melvina Thompson, and Secret Service agent Charles Rich.
As part of her California trip, Roosevelt visited several migrant farm worker camps in southern and central California and toured Yosemite National Park. In San Mateo, she met with photographer Dorothea Lange, whose poignant and transcendent Great Depression photographs pull on the heartstrings of each subsequent generation. After meeting with acquaintances in Sacramento, the first lady and her entourage headed east on Interstate 40 toward Reno. Hunger made them stop at the Sleepy Hollow Lodge, run by Mr. and Mrs. Chick Elliot.
In her journal, Roosevelt wrote that, “they had a most delicious meal of fried chicken, Montana ham, sweet potatoes and peas. One can not [sic] help admiring a woman like our hostess who with her husband is making a success of a small restaurant. She is no mere girl and the work is hard, but she and her husband are doing it with cheerfulness and zest in the adventure.”
