Learn What It Takes to Operate a Local Shelter

He has served in various capacities within both the public and private sector, working to improve overall homeless response systems in multiple communities. Most recently, Nick oversaw the City of Sacramento’s Department of Community Response, a third arm of the local first responder system and the first of its kind in the region. This experience gives him special insight into the different challenges faced by an urban homeless population, in Sacramento, and a rural population, like ours in Placer. One specific challenge Roseville faces is the sustainability of the south Placer nomadic shelter. The nomadic shelter was conceived as an emergency stop-gap in 2004. It busses homeless residents from The Gathering Inn in Roseville different churches in South Placer, as far as Loomis, each night. While this is a solid roof over someone's head and a warm meal, it does not allow for stability or consistency to help residents out of homelessness. While this program is not immediately at risk of dissolving, Nick tells me it is a challenge to operate and a permanent shelter would be more beneficial for the homeless and more cost effective for the city and county. I hope you will take the time to listen to our conversation and the rest of our first season of the "Homelessness in Placer County" podcast. If you would like to be added to our specific "homeless" issue list to get updates on our work in this area, please email me at SupervisorGore@Placer.CA.Gov. I hope you have a wonderful month and look forward to seeing you soon. Sincerely, Supervisor Bonnie Gore Successful High-Need Holiday DriveThank you again to all who contributed to our Holiday Drive!
