On Nov. 29, 1954, the Placer County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution opposing the construction of a dam on the South Fork of the American River at Coloma, which would effectively put the gold discovery site at the bottom of a new lake. The supervisors noted that the site was one of the most historically significant in the state and was visited by thousands of people annually.
The dam was proposed as part of a larger project by the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District that also included the construction of a dam in Auburn, but as many as 300 organizations passed resolutions strongly opposed to the Coloma Dam project.
The Coloma Dam project faded into obscurity when U.S. Senator Thomas Kuchel introduced a companion bill to House Resolution 10149 calling for the construction of the Auburn Dam. Kuchel said that the “project would provide much needed water storage and flood control on the lower reaches of the American River without flooding the historical gold discovery site at Coloma.”
