Foster and adoption

Board of Supervisors meeting location change for the next four public meetings of 2023
Volunteers needed for tax assistance program
On Nov. 19, 1949, the Mount Vernon Grange Hall in North Auburn welcomed two very significant visitors: Herbert Hanmann, a Canadian representing the International Federation of Agriculture Producers, and Charles Brannan, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. According to the Nov. 25 Colfax Record, “The occasion for this distinctive gathering was for fun and a short respite from the arduous duties of Grange conventions…”
About 130 national and state Grange officers, plus the distinguished guests, traveled up from Sacramento, where they were attending the National Grange Convention, to visit the Mount Vernon Grange Hall and enjoy a turkey dinner.
Brannan served as President Harry Truman’s secretary of agriculture from 1948 until Dwight D. Eisenhower’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 1953. He pushed what became known as the “Brannan Plan,” which would have compensated farmers for low prices due to a high surplus of agricultural commodities, but the plan never garnered enough congressional support to become law.
Brannan was the last surviving member of Truman’s cabinet. He died July 2, 1992, at the age of 88.
