On Nov. 6, 1995, the movie “Phenomenon” began filming at Machado Orchards in Bowman. Children at nearby Bowman School were surprised and in awe after being beckoned over by leading actor, John Travolta, who signed autographs and talked with them. While on a break, veteran actor Robert Duval enjoyed a piece of freshly baked raspberry pie from the Machado Orchards’ kitchen. The production moved into Old Town Auburn two days later.
One of the principal locations was the façade of a gas station and garage where Travolta’s character worked. It was erected in Old Town Auburn between the post office and Shanghai Bar (now the Auburn Alehouse) where many interior scenes were shot. For six weeks, cast and crew worked, played and patronized many area businesses and homes. The book fair scenes were filmed at Auburn Recreation Park with many local residents cast as extras.
“Phenomenon” was released July 3, 1996, and was a hit, grossing $152 million at the box office. Because over 90% of the film was shot locally and many Placer County residents were used as extras, the film is remembered by those who experienced it as a positive, community event.
