WATCH (34 min): Regional Homelessness Planning Update

Homelessness Update Thumb

Supervisor Bonnie Gore presents about the regional homelessness planning effort that has been taking place between the County, Cities and Law Enforcement leaders in Placer County.

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Elected officials, including me, often talk about quality of life and how we strive to achieve it for the residents we serve. However, we are at a crossroads when the issue of homelessness is discussed.

Residents who live near our creeks and highways are severely impacted by the increasing number of homeless in our community. For the last few months, I have been meeting with neighborhood groups. I appreciate the hundreds of residents who have taken the time to learn about this issue and how it is impacting our community. During one meeting, hosted near Trader Joe’s, several residents told me they can’t wait to leave Roseville because the homeless issue has gotten so bad in their neighborhood. They can’t enjoy their local parks with their children or even walk to get the mail. Frustrating. We want everyone to enjoy the Placer County quality of life.

In the 2023 count, there were 709 homeless residents in Placer County. In Roseville specifically there were nearly 250 homeless residents. Roseville has the highest number of homeless in the county with more than 60% of the total county unsheltered population - those living in tents in our creek beds and parks. Did you know only about one third of our Roseville homeless residents have a secure place to sleep at night?

Although Placer County has taken steps to address this issue, there is still more to be done. If we are to address this issue, we must have these tough conversations. If you have not done so already, please watch the presentation about our regional homelessness taskforce, which can be found on my county webpage, https:/www.placer.ca.gov/bonniegore.

Over the coming months I will be sharing insights here about homelessness in Placer County. In addition to these editorials, we will release a podcast soon about homelessness in Placer County, available in video and audio forms. These are conversations with local leaders, who have expertise on this topic, where we discuss the successes and challenges our community faces.

I encourage you to stay connected. If you would like to stay up to date with our effort, please send me an email at SupervisorGore@Placer.CA.Gov.

If you would like to help our homeless community, we are hosting a “high-need” holiday drive in Placer County on Dec. 6. Help us collect the items that are needed most by our local homeless! Flyer below.

I hope you have a wonderful month and look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
Bonnie
