EASTERN PLACER BULLETIN | AUG. 25

Town Hall Photo

Last week our office hosted an Eastern Placer County Evacuation and Emergency Preparedness Town Hall in Kings Beach. We had tremendous support from our first responders and agencies. I’d like to thank the leadership of CAL FIRE, Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Placer County Office of Emergency Services, California Highway Patrol, North Tahoe Fire, Olympic Valley Fire, Northstar Fire, Liberty Utilities, North Tahoe PUD, and county staff for their participation in the meeting.

The presentations covered the preparation and training hosted by County Office of Emergency Services and that each of the allied agencies participate in through Unified Command exercises. The presentation also outlined the various potential emergencies (fire, avalanche, landslides, flooding, hazmat spill, earthquake) that could impact our health and safety and needs for evacuation and sheltering. The Placer County Sheriff's Office provided a demonstration of the mapping software they use during an emergency to determine the levels, timing and staging of evacuations such as was used in both the River and Mosquito fires. They also explained the procedures of emergency notifications, door-to-door notifications, high-low sirens, and traffic management that occurs during these situations. The coordination between the agencies and resources immediately available through mutual aid were also described. The combined experience and leadership of our professionals was evident as they stand ready to respond to any type of emergency that may develop in our region.

The Town Hall was attended in-person by over 80 and another 150 persons on-line. The presenters answered live questions for over 2 hours and 92 written questions were addressed online. There are a number of suggestions and questions presented by the public that we are continuing to follow-up on for further action and response.

Our community's safety hinges on our collective knowledge and preparedness. We urge everyone to: 1) sign up for Placer Alert, 2) create and maintain their home's defensible space, 3) harden your home, 4) have a "go-bag" or emergency kit prepared , 5) pay attention to red flag warnings, and weather conditions, 6) identify several escape routes from your home and community, 7) evacuate early if you can, and 8) follow the directions you are given by law enforcement.

This event was an invaluable opportunity to learn directly from our local experts, to ask questions and to understand how to protect our families and neighbors during an emergency. Please review the links above for much more detailed information on each subject.

If you didn’t get a chance to tune in, here’s the town hall recording:

Stay safe and be prepared,
Supervisor Cindy Gustafson
