Placer County District 3 Newsletter

May 2023

Greetings from District 3

We have had more than our share of wind and rain during the last several weeks and now that we have some warmer sunny days the green grasses are growing rapidly.

The wind has brought down tree limbs and branches that need to be disposed of before everything dries out, which brings me to one of the Placer County Resource Conservation District’s most enduring successes, the Placer County Chipper Program. The program has been in operation for more than 10 years and incentivizes landowners to achieve defensible space and reduce the overall threat of wildfire in the community.

In March 2020, challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic forced a suspension of the program. In response, the District restructured by hiring employees instead of utilizing contracted labor and inmate crews. By October 2020, the program resumed and now actively serves residential neighborhoods across the county. In 2021/2022, the Chipper Program increased residential services with financial support from Placer County and CAL FIRE. Additional crews provided by Placer County Probation Department’s Alternative Sentencing Program are drastically reducing wait times.

I want to thank Placer County Resource Conservation District Executive Director Sarah Jones and her Board of Directors for their leadership in providing these enhanced services to Placer County residents.

Please contact the Placer County Resource Conservation District at: (530) 390-6680 for more information.

Warm Regards,

Supervisor Jim Holmes
