The Jan. 12, 1922, Lincoln News Messenger headline screamed in bold: "Chicken House" Robber is Caught.
In 1910, a man named Harry Lewis, under the alias of Charles Kline, led a gang of men to rob a house of prostitution in Lincoln. The men got away, but the number of "innocent" male witnesses to the robbery caused quite a societal stir.
Sheriff Gum kept an eye out for any mention of Lewis and in 1922 he finally got word that Lewis was fleeing Canada after being charged with murder. Gum had Bellingham, Washington, officers arrest Lewis after he crossed the border. Gum sent Deputy Dependener of Auburn and Constable Beermann of Lincoln to Bellingham to escort Lewis back to Placer County. On Jan. 10, they returned and locked Lewis up in the Placer County jail.
Harry Lewis was convicted and sentenced to 10 years for the attempted robbery of a Roseville merchant. Much to the relief of many men in Lincoln who would have had to testify, the "Chicken House" robbery charge was dropped.
