On August 27, 1959, the Auburn All-Stars Little League team, the west region representative, defeated New York (east region), 8 to 1 in the semi-finals of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. They had previously beaten the South Region representative, Alabama, 3 to 1 in the quarterfinals.
On Aug. 29, they faced a powerful Michigan team representing the north region in the championship game. Unfortunately for the boys from Auburn, the Michigan pitcher was too strong and the team from the north prevailed 12-0.
Saddened by the loss, but excited and proud to have competed in the Little League World Series, the Auburn team flew back to California on Aug. 31. They were greeted by throngs at the Sacramento Airport, including members of numerous northern California Little League teams. A caravan of 100 cars, led by the California Highway Patrol, paraded toward Auburn. They were met by crowds in Roseville, Rocklin and Loomis before winding their way to Central Square in Auburn where a crowd estimated at over 1,000 celebrated the return of their middle school heroes.
