The July 6, 1901 issue of the Placer Herald told the story of a daring stage robbery that took place on Wednesday, June 3, 1901.
According to the Herald, as the Foresthill stage coach made its way to Foresthill, a man wearing a mask and carrying a double-barreled shotgun stepped out in the road and called for the driver to stop. The driver refused, at which point the man wearing the mask shot the lead horse. The wagon came to a stop. The robber demanded that the Wells Fargo strongbox be thrown down and then ordered everyone to get out of the stage and line up. He told everyone to throw their money on the ground and walk up the grade. The robber made off with about $100, half of which was from the Wells Fargo strongbox.
Once news of the robbery reached the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies Dependener and Coan went to the crime scene and pursued the robber. Wells Fargo detective Thacker joined the pursuit the following day, but the thief was never caught.
The lead horse shot by the robber was named Old Joe and after the robbery people mourned his loss. A memorial to Old Joe was erected at the site of the robbery along what is now the Foresthill Road. Over the years, the look of the memorial has changed and it is currently maintained by the Native Sons of the Golden West, Parlor #59.
