WATCH (5 1/2 Minutes): Placer County Animal Services

BG_Animal-Services_Thumb

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

This month I was excited to visit our furry friends at the Placer County Animal Services Center on the Government Center in Auburn. Katie Ingram, the Animal Services Manager, was so gracious and introduced me to a couple little kittens named “Lightning” and “Thunder” who were up for adoption. I also met Hippa, a very sweet 9-year-old pit bull terrier.

I knew that our Animal Services Center served as the animal shelter where residents could adopt and find help caring for their animals but I was fascinated to find out that nearly 3,000 animals are taken in by our Animal Services Division. Their team cares for all animals, including bunnies, guinea pigs, livestock, chickens/roosters and more. On top of that, they’ve maintained a save rate of almost 94%!

All pets receive medical evaluations, which may include vaccination, deworming, spay/neuter, surgery, bloodwork, x-rays, dental exams and treatment, disease management and wound treatment/repair. Many of these services are also available to residents, like animal behavior/training information, spay/neuter and low-cost vaccine resources.

Katie expressed to me that their priority when an animal is brought in is to reunite it with its owner. Approximately 34% of the pets are reunited and 60% are adopted out or transferred to rescue partners or other shelters.

Animal Services also oversees Animal Control and their officers respond to nearly 10,000 calls for service each year. These calls can include:

  • Responding to reports of lost, injured, and deceased animals

  • Investigating animal cruelty, abuse, and neglect

  • Providing disaster response and emergency assistance during events

  • Providing education on humane treatment of animals

  • Enforcing state law and county ordinances regulating animal care and welfare

  • Or Investigating animal bites and rabies exposure

Animal services is always seeking out foster homes for underage and animals in need of medical or behavioral care. If you are interested, please be sure to reach out. They provide training and support throughout the process.

I encourage you to stop by our Animal Services Center in Auburn to visit with the wonderful animals. Perhaps one will become the next member of your family!

Have a wonderful rest of April and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
Bonnie
