North Lake Tahoe
 Our Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to rename three county-maintained roads that contained the word “Squaw” to alternative names. Nearly 700 community members responded to a survey with the majority supporting the changes. Learn more
Recycling and trash
A new ordinance was introduced this week that if passed would require residents and businesses to comply with state law SB 1383, which reduces organic waste materials sent to landfills, such as food scraps, green waste and paper. Learn more

On Feb. 27, 1944, the U.S. Army’s DeWitt General Hospital opened in North Auburn with the U.S. flag raised on the massive 50-foot flagpole in front of the administration building.
By the opening ceremony, DeWitt had already received its first two patients. When the hospital opened, it had a 1,727-bed capacity. During this time, a population of over 3,000 individuals lived on the site. This included U.S. Army officers, military medical personnel and enlisted servicemen and women, including of the Women's Army Corps. The DeWitt General Hospital officially closed Dec. 31, 1945. In 1946, it became the DeWitt State Mental Hospital (and is now the site of the Placer County Government Center campus).
