This week in Placer County history

On Feb. 12, 1933, Roy Mikkelsen of Auburn won the U.S. National Ski Jump competition held in Salisbury, Connecticut. Roy was born in Norway in 1907. He immigrated to America in 1924, eventually settling in Auburn where he was an active member of the Auburn Ski Club. He participated in the 1932 and 1936 Winter Olympics. During World War II, he served in Italy fighting with the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division. He was elected mayor of Auburn in 1952. Mikkelsen died in 1967, but his legacy lives on through his many achievements in winter sports and local business. His skis are on display in the Placer County Museum on the first floor of the Historic Courthouse in Auburn. Learn more about our Placer museums
