Dear Friends and Neighbors -

Often we think of the District Attorney as solely the prosecuting arm of law enforcement in our community. Placer County's District Attorney, Morgan Gire, appointed by the Board of Supervisors in April 2020, has initiated multiple outreach programs to inform the public of scams and other dangers.

If you are a fan of crime television or movies, I encourage you to sign up for the Placer County District Attorney’s Citizens Academy. It is a nine-week program that will offer accelerated courses each week and speaks to how these processes take place in the real world. During the academy, you will learn about the District Attorney’s Office, its role within the criminal justice system and the services that are provided to the community.

To ensure the safety and protection of the county’s senior citizens, the Placer County District Attorney’s office established Placer County PROTECT, a multi-disciplinary task force team dedicated to elder abuse investigations, victim support and community awareness.

“PROTECT” stands for

Providing
Resources and
Outreach
To
Elderly
Citizens
Together

This team is composed of the District Attorney’s Office, victim services, adult protective services, local law enforcement agencies, nonprofit organizations and community representatives.

One of the most important elements of the District Attorney’s office is victim support services. If you, or someone you know, are a victim of a crime, you have access to advocates and resources to help navigate the often challenging criminal justice process.

Our community and state are currently experiencing a fentanyl poisoning epidemic. In many cases, teens are seeking out prescription drugs from black market dealers and the drugs are unknowingly laced with fentanyl leading to an almost immediate poisoning and death. The District Attorney and his office want you to be aware of the dangers and discuss these issues with your children and to avoid these counterfeit pills. Your conversation could save a life.

During December, the District Attorney’s office recognized National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Alcohol and other impaired driving incidences increase by nearly 50% during the holiday season so they launched the “Friends don’t let friends DUI” program. It is important that we all get home safely and with rideshare, public transit and designated drivers available as an option, safely is often only a few clicks away.

Sincerely,
Bonnie

Public Health extends its health warning as COVID hospitalizations surge

In an effort to support local hospitals impacted by the sharp rise in COVID-related cases, Public Health is extending its late summer Health Warning and urging all residents to use high-quality medical masks while in all indoor settings around others to protect against the highly infectious Omicron and Delta variants. The rapid increase in cases and hospitalizations in recent days strongly suggests Omicron is spreading widely in Placer as throughout the region. Learn more.

State organic waste regulation now in effect

New state regulations require residents and businesses to recycle their organic waste as of Jan. 1. This means things like food scraps, yard waste, paper, and cardboard must be kept out of the landfill, where they produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The good news is, if you receive garbage service in Placer County, our materials  recovery facilities are already recycling many of these materials for you. Just like we already separate recyclables like plastics and metals from your garbage, our promise, “you toss, we sort,” goes for a lot of your organic waste, too. Learn more

Public Safety Spotlight

Deputies Lewis and Byers save the day

cisco couple

After the recent snowstorms, Linda and Hank found themselves trapped in their house, buried under six feet of snow! The couple had no access to water as their well was frozen, and the snow around the home had become like a block of ice, making it impossible for them to shovel it. With no friends or family nearby to help, they turned to the Sheriff’s Office for assistance. Luckily, Deputies Lewis and Byers were more than willing to help shovel a path for Linda and Hank to leave their house and access their vehicle (which was also buried in snow)!

Thanks to our hardworking deputies, many seniors and families throughout Placer County have been dug out of their homes!
