Stand Up Placer COO, Rebecca Chenoweth

Dear Friends and Neighbors -

Domestic Violence is a tragic reality in our community and I wanted to use my monthly newsletter to shine a light on this issue.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Rebecca Chenoweth, Chief Operating Officer with Stand Up Placer who shared with me important information for victims and their families about what services they provide, what signs you should be aware of and how those experiencing domestic violence can reach them.

Need Help?

What To Look For

Victims and their families should be aware of the cycle where the abuser will cycle between violent and apologetic phases.

Cycle of Violence

The relationship will start in the honeymoon phase where all is well. Tensions begin to build as the victim begins to feel they are "walking on eggshells." The abuser may begin to display volatile, and possibly violent, behavior. This is then followed with an apology, with things like flowers or chocolates, before the cycle begins again at the honeymoon phase.

Stand Up Placer offers services to any victim of domestic violence:

- Advocacy -- including safety planning

- Accompaniment -- to the hospital or to court

- Legal Services -- There is a staff attorney and paralegal who help with restraining orders or custody desputes

- Housing -- temporary, transitional, and permanent. Stand Up Placer also has a safe house where victims can stay up to 90 days

- Therapy -- for those in crisis

- Thrift store -- where survivors can shop for clothing and other household items at no charge.

Victims can also call the 24-hour crisis line at 800-575-5352.

By the Numbers

Our community recently witnessed a high profile incident where a woman who had been in a violent relationship was murdered by her abuser while on shift at a local restaurant. This issue is prevalent in our community and likely goes unreported all too often.

Rebecca told me that one in four women and one in six men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. A woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds and domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the United States.

We also know one in every three teenagers will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Every day, at least three women in the United States are killed by their partners. Every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. Approximately 15.5 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year and approximately 60% of abusers also abuse children in the home.

If you think you are, or if you think someone you know is, experiencing domestic violence please do not hesitate to reach out for support. Resources are available and people want to help.

Sincerely,
Bonnie
