It’s hard to believe we have been living with the effects of COVID-19 for five months now. I’m not ashamed to admit that the uncertainty, political and social divides, and concern for loved ones can be a little overwhelming at times, and I’ve heard from many of you who are feeling the same way. The good news is that we have a variety of resources and tools to help us get some relief from the stresses of this pandemic. From opportunities get out an enjoy what Placer County has to offer to programs and funds established to help those who are struggling financially, there are ways to get some relief from the burden so many of us are feeling right now.

We all have different needs right now, but for people who are in need of help with things like food, mental health services, financial assistance and community support please visit our website for a list of resources put together by the Placer County Office of Education in partnership with several Placer County Departments.  On this page you will find links to organizations, public agencies and houses of worship that have programs to help people get through this difficult time.

If you find that you are able to give to programs that help fund these services, you can make a donation directly to your favorite organization, or make a contribution to the COVID-19 Response Fund set up by the Placer Community Foundation. This fund is being managed in conjunction with the Placer County Health and Human Services Department and provides financial contributions to programs that support food distribution, senior and youth services, mental health services. 

Beyond making sure your basic needs are met, it is also important to remember the value of finding moments of peace and joy, especially during times like this. One great way to get some relief from the stresses we are facing these days is to get out in nature. Spending time outdoors has been shown to help reduce depression and anxiety, and we are very fortunate to be surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty here in Placer County. The Placer County Parks Division has worked hard to implement measures to help ensure you and your family can safely visit parks and trails throughout the county.  Another great natural resource that is right in our backyard is the Auburn State Recreation Area.  Although some areas remain closed to the public, many trails, river access points, day use areas and campgrounds remain open. I hope you get a chance to find some peace of mind from Placer County’s outdoor resources.

Another way to bring some joy to your life is to add a furry friend to your family. Most of us are spending more time at home these days, which means it’s a perfect time to introduce a new pet to the family. The Placer County Animal Services Center is open to the public (with some social distancing restrictions in place) and there are pets just waiting for you to take them home. Visit the Animal Services Division’s webpage to learn more about adoptable dogs, cats and even a mouse! 

Even if you aren’t ready to conquer the great outdoors or adopt a pet, I hope you will remember to take some time to find positive things to focus on right now. Keeping our spirits up helps us, our loved ones and our community. We will get through this, thought it won’t be easy all the time. Remember there are ways to feel better…listen to music, make your favorite meal, use your energy for something creative. Above all, try to stay positive. We all have so much to be thankful for, even when things seem bleak. We truly are all in this together, and I know we will pull through.
