November 2019

image

Wow, another year is already closing in on us and as I look at my calendar for the month we’re sailing into - November and all the activities in store for not only myself, but for all of the community, I am thankful for so much: family, friends, the beautiful landscape from east to west in this place we call Placer County. A place alive with activities from the young to the not so young. For me and generations before and after me it is truly a spectacular place to call home.

Although we have been surrounded by some serious fire conditions and have faced recurring power shut offs in our area, I am obviously reminded of and "thankful" for all those who are dedicated to Placer County, especially our Public Safety teams (County & City Police, Fire & our Office of Emergency Services, to name a few). They ensure we continue to be happy in making our homes here in Placer County, a wonderful place to live, play and work. Be sure to thank your Public Safety personnel whenever you get the chance.

Events in November are many and here are some I will be attending and hope to see and catch up with all of you at least one of them.

First up this month we have the Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel Veterans Day Of Honor scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd at the Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel. I am honored to not only attend, but to also speak at this event. This patriotic event offers an opportunity to honor veterans who have been cared for by Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel. A plaque for each veteran has been added to their Veteran’s Wall of Honor located on the outside of their building near the entrance. Families and friends return year after year to show honor and respect to their loved ones. This year they will be unveiling nearly 100 new plaques of those served by Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel and will also be honoring all the living veterans who will be attending.

This year is the 25th Annual Cowpoke Fall Gathering scheduled for November 7-10, 2019, and another favorite of mine taking place in Loomis. This event has something for everyone in the family and ensures our Western traditions in Placer County are kept alive through storytelling, cowboy poetry, and music.  There is a free Cowboy Church event on Sunday, with spiritual poetry and music.

I especially want to thank Bert and Carol Braun of Loomis for bringing this wonderful program to Placer County and Loomis for the past 25 years! More information and tickets can be found on their website.

Another important event and a community favorite for over 100 years, is the Auburn Veterans Day Parade, Community Ceremony and free Luncheon. As an interesting tidbit of information regarding your District 3 Supervisor, friend and neighbor, I’ve marched in this parade as a student at EV Cain, and many more times since then. It is scheduled for Monday, November 11 with the parade starting at 10:50 a.m. at the corner of Lincoln Way and Cleveland street, and proceeding down Lincoln Way. This year"s Grand Marshall is Court Bradbury, Post 84 Adjutant / Finance Officer. I hope you will join me, along with District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson and hundreds of your neighbors who will come together to honor those who served our Country.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the ever growing and popular Mountain Mandarin Festival now in its 26th year! Rain or shine, opening day is set for Friday, November 22 and will run through Sunday, November 24th. There is everything from delicious food, drink, activities, and of course the tasty and delicious mandarins we anxiously await all year. Please visit our Placer County Mandarin orchards throughout Placer County. They really are the best!

I’m hoping you have a wonderful month, full of thanks giving and time well spent with family and friends at one of these events, or the many other activities throughout Placer County, our “California Gold” in this place we call home.

Warm Regards,

Supervisor Jim Holmes

One thing I want to remind you of is to encourage every citizen in the county to sign up for Placer Alert. This is a state-of-the-art community notification system to alert residents about emergency events and other important public safety information. This system enables us to call, text or email critical information to you quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods and yes wildfire evacuations. Please help us to help you and sign up for this emergency notification system. My hope is that this year’s wildfire season will come and go without incident, but for that to happen we must be united in our prevention efforts.
