Homeless shelter operations extended; alternative location search continues

Coming on the heels of a successful community meeting last week about the temporary homeless shelter in North Auburn, the Placer County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a 90-day extension for the shelter’s operation. Read more


Inmate food service shifts to private contractor

After much deliberation and discussion, the Placer County Board of Supervisors Tuesday awarded a contract to an outside vendor to provide food service to county inmates and juvenile offenders. Read more


More pedestrian safety improvements coming to Highway 49 in North Auburn

The Placer County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved funding for more sidewalks and landscaping improvements along the east side of Highway 49 between New Airport Road and Education Street. Learn more


A look at the important work of Placer County’s Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Board

More often than we may realize, many of us struggle with mental health or substance abuse issues, or know someone close to us who does. Aiding community members with those struggles is important to Placer County, and we rely on our Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Board to help us really understand what the needs are. We recently had the chance to sit down with two members of the board to discuss their accomplishments. Learn about the incredible work they’ve been able to do for our community here.

Squaw Valley to host Audi FIS Ski World Cup this weekend

For the first time in 19 years, the World Cup is returning to California, bringing four days of races, concerts, parties and athlete meet-and-greets to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. Free shuttles will run Friday and Saturday between Truckee, Tahoe City and Squaw, and vehicles with four or more visitors will have first-come, first-serve access to free parking. Click here for more details about the event, transportation and parking. 


The Kings Beach Snowfest Parade is Saturday

Rain, snow or shine, the Kings Beach Snowfest Parade will take place Saturday. This fun-filled parade will feature creative and entertaining entries from around 30 groups, businesses and organizations. If you plan on traveling in the area during this time, be aware that Highway 28 will be closed between Highway 267 and Fox Street. Learn more about the Snowfest festivities here.

The North Lake Tahoe Chamber, Conventions and Visitors Bureau and Resort Association are accepting nominations for their 63rd Annual Community Awards through March 10. There will be several categories of awards including Best New Business, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Citizen of the Year and more. Placer Youth Impact Awards now accepting applications

The Placer County Youth Impact Awards are accepting applications through March 28. The awards recognize the county's high school youth for their hard work and contributions to the community. Winners in each category will receive a $100 scholarship cash award. Learn more and apply here.


Placer artist commissioned for Golden 1 Center pieces

Stan Padilla is a man on creative fire. The 71-year-old multi-disciplinary artist, author, educator and cultural activist is currently juggling multiple public art commissions, including a sculpture and two murals on the Rocklin campus of Sierra College and the restoration of Auburn’s Confluence mural. But the projects that have Padilla fired up are the two commissions at Sacramento’s newly opened Golden 1 Center. Read more on pages 8 - 10 of PlacerArt's Perspectives on Arts.


Volunteers needed for Friends of Auburn Ravine Salmon Cam Marathon

Friends of Auburn Ravine needs your help counting salmon! The group will be scanning videos of salmon migrating up Auburn Ravine Creek March 18. Portable hard drives and video viewing software will be provided, however volunteers need to bring their own PC laptop. Be sure to RSVP by March 11. More details here.
