Good afternoon! Things
are heating up in the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project, and we
wanted to alert you to some key activities that will begin next week.
Our contractor, Q & D Construction, has made good progress on the completion of improvements along Salmon Avenue, Secline Street, State Parks parking lot, and the Christmas Tree parking lot.
Several key activities are planned to start soon. First, the final highway striping will begin next week. This work will consist of pavement grinding and placement of final pavement markings such as lane stripes, bike lanes, crosswalks, etc. The work will be focused between Secline Street on the west side of town and Fox Street on the east side. During this activity, traffic will be shifted back and forth to create adequate space for crews to work. Parking along the highway will be restricted to help protect vehicles from damage. We hope this striping effort will be completed in one week, but it may extend into the following week.
In addition to the highway striping effort, two of the public parking lots will be closed for striping. This includes the Rainbow lot on Deer Street and Rainbow Avenue and the Salmon lot next to the post office. We plan to close both lots June 22 - 24, so please plan ahead. Landscape crews will also be on site next week to perform maintenance and replacement of plants.
The contractor has continued mobilizing equipment and staging materials at the Chipmunk Yard, a county-owned parcel of land at Chipmunk, on the south side of state Route 28. Water main work at the west end of the project, just east of the 28/267 intersection is scheduled for the night of Tuesday, June 21 from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Affected residents will be notified of this water service shutoff no later than June 19.
Work on the underground storm drain system is underway and continues on state Route 28, just east of the 267 intersection and also on Route 28 west of Chipmunk. Temporary traffic controls will continue to be in effect (delineators, cones and signage), and traffic will be restored to its original configuration at the end of each work shift.
At the west end of the project, night crews will continue performing underground storm drain work at the intersection of highways 28 and 267, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Thursday nights. The steel plates evident in this vicinity cover partially completed sections of the storm drain system. Progress has been slowed slightly by old, abandoned, unmarked utilities. Traffic will require one-way alternating controls through this area, which will be done by flaggers. California Highway Patrol will be onsite during nighttime operations, which are expected to continue for the next three weeks.
At the east end of the project, daytime underground work on Route 28 east of Chipmunk continues to progress Monday through Friday. Temporary traffic control measures are in place during the work shift, closing shoulders and temporarily shifting traffic around the work area. Signage is in place, detouring pedestrians to the side of the highway opposite the work. Steel plates cover the in-progress work between shifts. Nighttime underground work at the intersection of Chipmunk and state Route 28 is anticipated for the entire week of June 27. Once underground storm drain work is completed at both ends of the project, anticipated in early July, lanes will be temporary restriped into configurations that allow curb, gutter, and sidewalk work to proceed in a way that minimizes impacts to traffic.
Please take caution in driving through the construction zone.
And no need to worry! We will once again button-up construction for the Independence Day weekend, so that you and your guests can enjoy the holiday without any hassles of construction.
Have a great weekend!
