Starting June 1st, electricity will cost more during peak hours as summer Time-of-Use (TOU) rates take effect. These summer rates will remain in effect until October 31st, impacting bills throughout the warmer months.
Why do summer rates increase? During hot summer afternoons and evenings, air conditioner usage surges across California, putting significant strain on the electrical grid. The higher rates during these “peak” hours reflect the increased cost of producing electricity when demand is highest.
Three simple ways to save:
- Shift major appliance use (laundry, dishwasher, EV charging) to before 4pm or after 9pm
- Pre-cool your home by setting your thermostat lower in the morning, then raising it to 78° during peak hours
- Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day to reduce air conditioning usage
|
|
Know Your Rate Plan:
Different rate plans have different peak hours. Most Ava customers are on the E-TOU-C rate with 4pm-9pm peak hours. Other options include E-TOU-D (5pm-8pm peaks) or E-TOU-B (4pm-9pm weekday peaks with weekend off-peak).

Photo from a Community Listening Session in Oakland, hosted by ECC and LCEA
This month, we’re proud to highlight the important work of Emerald Cities Collaborative (ECC) and Local Clean Energy Alliance (LCEA), two organizations deeply committed to community resilience and environmental equity.
ECC and LCEA have been leading efforts to gather community input about resilience needs across our service area, and we’re honored to support this work through a Community Investment Grant. These valuable insights will shape Ava's upcoming Community Resilience Hubs Initiative, which aims to support community-owned resilience hub sites with technical assistance and solar & storage incentives.
