Beginning January 8, households that participate in Ava’s income-qualifying rates under the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) or Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) programs began to receive a one-time $100 credit on their latest utility bill. Additionally, all Ava residential customers will be credited $8.82, totaling $4.1 million. Non-residential accounts will receive volumetric credits (based on their electricity usage) on their bills, totaling $7 million.
With 115,000 qualifying CARE and FERA accounts and 1.7 million total residents, our bill credits will return over $22 million to Ava customers this New Year.

At this month’s Board of Directors meeting, Director González of San Leandro made a motion to re-elect Director Balch (Mayor of Pleasanton) and elect Director Andersen (Mayor of Piedmont) as Chair and Vice Chair (respectively) of the Ava Board of Directors. The motion was unanimously approved by the remainder of the Board.
The motion allowed Director Balch to continue serving as Chair of the Board, a position he has held since February 21, 2024. Director Andersen replaced Albany City Councilmember Aaron Tiedemann, who no longer serves on the Ava Board of Directors, as Vice Chair. Chair Balch and Vice Chair Andersen will serve in their positions for a one year term. Future Chair and Vice Chair elections will happen in 2026.
