October brings news about our renewable energy procurement, the California Climate Credit, and changing rates.

The National Renewable Energy Lab annual rankings came out last month, and Ava ranked #3 nationally compared to other CCAs for both green power sales (MWh) and the number of customers receiving green power!
Nationally, we rank sixth in green power sales across thousands of electricity utilities and CCAs.
Much of the demand for Ava's green power comes from our eight member cities that chose Renewable 100 as the default service. Customers in those cities automatically receive 100% solar and wind service.
Outside those eight cities, Ava customers automatically receive our Bright Choice service, which provides a 5% discount to PG&E rates, and contains over 50% "eligible renewable" content (not including large hydropower or nuclear). Bright Choice is on track to be 100% carbon-free by 2030.

Every Spring and Fall residential customers (and qualifying small businesses) throughout California see a line item on their energy bill called the “California Climate Credit.”
This credit is your share of a state program that requires power plants, natural gas distributors, and other large industries that emit greenhouse gasses to buy carbon pollution permits.
The credit is delivered on your utility bill and is funded from the statewide cap-and-trade program. Every eligible Ava customer will receive the same amount ($55.17 in October 2024), regardless of energy usage. The credit will be applied automatically to your bill.

PG&E launched new transmission and delivery rates on October 1, increasing bills by an average of $5 per month for the typical Ava customer.
There are two steps to getting the electricity to your house to turn on the lights: 1) generation, and 2) transmission and delivery.
Ava generates your electricity by building power plants (mostly wind and solar) and procuring power for customers. The second step is the transmission and delivery of the electricity down your street and into your home. PG&E handles that, as they own and operate all of the electrical poles and wires. Both generation and delivery are volumetric charges based on a rate per kWh multiplied by the amount of kWh that you use.
On October 1st, electricity generation rates (the Ava portion of your bill) did not change, while PG&E raised transmission and delivery rates by 6%.
