This past week Ava staff, Board Directors, and municipal staff of cities on Renewable 100 had the opportunity to tour Ava's wind farm, the Scott Haggerty Wind Energy Center, in Altamont Pass.
The wind farm came online in July 2021 and houses 23 2.5 MW turbines by General Electric. Each turbine tower stands 80 meters (~260 feet) tall, and each blade is 56 meters (~180 feet) long.
The project's name honors retired Alameda County supervisor Scott Haggerty who for 20 plus years represented District 1, which includes the Tri-Valley where the project is located. Haggerty has been a longtime advocate for renewable energy and was instrumental in the formation of Ava, serving as the initial Chair of our Board of Directors.
Attendees toured the inside of one of the turbines and were able to ask questions of wind turbine technicians and the project's site manager. Guests were especially excited to hear about the new IdentiFlight system used to temporarily shut off turbines when it identifies eagles, hawks, and other birds within one kilometer of the turbine. A turbine at full speed can stop within 60 seconds!
