At the December Board of Directors meeting, Eric Byous from the U.S. EPA presented EBCE's Jessie Denver and Zac Thompson with an award for their innovative pilot project.
A few months ago Jessie Denver, Director of Transportation Electrification Market Development, and Zac Thompson, Energy Resources Program Senior Associate, received great news in the mail. Their Brownfields-to-Chargefields Pilot Team had won an award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for their project to assess the viability of revitalizing Brownfield sites into EV fast charging stations. Brownfields are sites on which hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants are suspected or have been found that complicate or prohibit the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of said property. EBCE's team employed a first-of-its-kind approach to evaluate these sites and has developed a replicable process for understanding the potential of revitalizing Brownfields as EV fast charging hubs to maximize delivery of community benefits.
The award recognizes EBCE's Transportation Electrification program team’s accomplishment as one of the most noteworthy nationwide.
“EPA celebrates East Bay Community Energy’s pioneering work to revitalize brownfields into fast charging hubs for zero-emission vehicles,” said Adrienne Priselac Assistant Director of EPA’s Land, Chemicals and Redevelopment Division. “EBCE’s work helps improve air quality in the Bay Area for underserved communities impacted by goods movement and vehicle emissions. Moreover, EBCE’s comprehensive approach is the first of its kind funded by the EPA Brownfields Program and lays out a process that can be replicated in communities across the country.”
“Our work on this project aims to develop solutions to two key challenges: brownfields cleanup and revitalization, and expanding equitable access to EV fast charging throughout EBCE’s service area, especially for renters in multifamily housing and truck fleets operating in or through our communities most impacted by air pollution.” said Denver.

In November 2021, Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act creating 60 new programs and expanding funding at the Department of Energy. More recently, the Inflation Reduction Act passed, which has been lauded as the largest and most comprehensive climate-related action ever taken by Congress.
In this piece published on Energy Central, EBCE's Principal Legislative Manager Alec Ward outlines clean energy opportunities for EBCE and its customers to look forward to following the passage of these historic bills.
“With passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Congress has created an all-you-can-eat banquet for clean energy gourmands like East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) and its customers.
Funding in the laws opens the door to a potential transformation of the US energy system. Since many of the provisions align with where EBCE was already headed, the laws may get us there faster and with lower costs.”
Read the full article to understand how the bills align with EBCE priorities and plans of procuring and building more renewables, decarbonizing buildings, transportation electrification, and environmental justice. Plus, there’s plenty for you! Solar tax credits, home electrification rebates, and clean vehicle tax credits are just a few of the benefits that EBCE customers can take advantage of.
