New federal bill will help lead East Bay's clean energy transition
Last month, President Biden signed the historic Inflation Reduction Act. The bill is now the single largest climate investment in U.S. history and will put the country on a path to roughly 40% emissions reduction by 2030. The bill faced a tough road towards passage, and in support EBCE drafted a joint letter from 10 CCAs and joined 60+ climate, building decarbonization, energy, & affordable housing groups in another letter calling for passage of the bill. Now, EBCE is turning towards implementing the bill in a way that supports our community.
The Inflation Reduction Act will open up hundreds of billions of dollars to accelerate EBCE's clean energy transition. For example, the bill extends and expands clean energy tax credits, which will make it cheaper for EBCE to procure and provide new clean energies like wind, storage, geothermal, and solar over the next decade. The bill also creates multiple programs customers can access to make home electrification and energy efficiency practices easier and more affordable. Additionally, it will provide tax credits to customers buying new and used electric vehicles.
The bill will also importantly invest $60 billion toward environmental justice issues, ensuring these efforts are touching down where they are needed most. There are so many options on the table that Rewiring America created a calculator you can use to determine which incentives you may qualify for! This was a big policy win, and building on the Inflation Reduction Act, EBCE will keep fighting at the local, state, and federal level to capitalize on this new momentum for climate action.
