COVID-19 UPDATES
Booster Vaccines for Seniors and People at High-Risk Move Toward Final Approval
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized use of Pfizer’s COVID-19 booster vaccine for seniors age 65 and older and people at high risk of death or hospitalization from the virus.
Once the State of California approves the administration of boosters, the County will begin dispensing those vaccines. The County will announce local availability within days.
People who are eligible will be encouraged to make an appointment by visiting sbcovid19.com or by contacting their local pharmacy or health care provider. Because of possible high demand created by this expanded eligibility, walk-in vaccination service could be limited, so appointments are strongly recommended. People who need assistance making an appointment or who do not have access to the internet are encouraged to call the COVID-19 hotline at (909) 387-3911 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The FDA authorization only applies to those who received the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine six months ago or more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend mixing brands of vaccine.
The Moderna vaccine has only been authorized as a third dose for people who are severely immunocompromised. A booster vaccine has not yet been authorized for those who took the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Booster Doses
The next chapter for the County’s vaccination effort is providing third-dose vaccines to immunocompromised people and after September 20, providing booster shots for all Americans eight months following their second dose of mRNA vaccines Pfizer and Moderna.
The criteria for the immune-compromised was determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and includes people who have:
- Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
- Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response
If you are an immune-compromised person and want to make an appointment for a third-dose vaccine, visit sbcovid19.com. You do not need to provide medical proof of your condition, but will be asked to fill out a self-attestation form.
